Arlington Heights, IL, May. 27 (UPI) -- Hundreds of Arlington Heights, Ill., residents protested a school board decision accepting the resignations of four teachers who drank during a field trip. An angry crowd of hundreds of parents, teachers and students booed Board President Dan Petro Thursday when he accepted the South Middle School teachers' resignations for drinking on an overnight environmental field trip to Northern Illinois University's outdoor center, the Chicago Tribune reported. The teachers apparently had a 15-year tradition of taking turns being "on duty" while others went to a local bar during the annual event.

"I am just a few weeks away from graduation," eighth-grader Brandon Schroeder said. "I lose my joy and pride when I think that the teacher who helped me the most to graduate might not be there to see me. "

Looks like little Brandon gets to learn a very important lesson about following the rules.

If I had to babysit a bunch of 8th graders, you'd bet I'd be at the bar too.

LOL! As an ex-teacher of 8th graders, I agree with you!

Although teachers are known as enthusiastic consumers of adult beverages (well, at least the ones I worked with), there's an appropriate time and place for it.

Why is the remedy for everything resignation, why don't they give them a warning, that if this happens again they're out on their can. Assuming they are good teachers in every other respect and they didn't bring the alcohol back to the camp. If they got paid for the field trip they should return the money.

I think they should have abstained from alcohol for the field trip because they have a level of responsibility and the parents put their trust in them. Lucky for them no crisis came up.

If teachers want to drink like real businessmen do, let them get real jobs.

Yeah in Upper Management:
An Indian walks into a cafe with a shotgun in one hand pulling a male

buffalo with the other. He says to the waiter, "Me want coffee."

The waiter says, "Sure chief, coming right up." He gets the Indian a

tall mug of coffee. The Indian drinks the coffee down in one gulp, turns

and blasts the buffalo with the shotgun, causing parts of the animal to

splatter every where, then just walks out.

The next morning the Indian returns. He has his shotgun in one hand

pulling another male buffalo with the other. He walks up to the

counter and says to the waiter, "Me want coffee."

The waiter says, "Whoa, Tonto! We're still cleaning up your mess from

yesterday. What was all that about, anyway?"

(hang on, this is really good......)

The Indian smiles and proudly says, "Me training for upper management

position: Come in, drink coffee, shoot the bull, leave mess for

others to clean up, disappear for rest of day.

There are those right here on FR who would say that it's no big deal if it were the students who had been drinking. Yet those same members will come down on teachers who were "off-duty" and ADULTS getting a drink.

YEs - the rules for such trips are that there is NO Alcohol. Yes, these teachers were idiots for drinking (despite the fact that this is apparently a long standing tradition). They were responsible for these kids - and should have acted like it.
