As a retired military and former Drill Instructor, I see many more reasons for the return of the Draft than just filling billits.
Many of these young men just need some dicipline in their lives -- Period!

The only reason why I asked for your opinion is because the last time you have responded to anyone here was back on April 5th, 2005

You would be wrong. They are not calling for a draft.

"volunteers do not make good victims, draftees do!"
Bingo. Nothing irks the press more than to interview a wounded vet and hear him say that he wants to go back to help out his buddies.

Here we go again!
Leftists trying to scare young people into believing Bush will restart the draft. Nevermind that Don Rumsfeld himself as a young congressman in the late 1960's was an advocate of abolishing the draft. And nevermind that the last time a draft was started by a Republican was the Civil War, ext, ext.

Call me crazy, but I thought the military was designed to kill our enemies as efficiently as possible, not a social engineering program.

"consider the source"
You would be correct. This is just a follow-up to Rangel's mouthing off about his stupid bill to start the draft again.
This stuff is just getting tiresome.

Actually that's not what the article says at all, the headline (The NYT headline) is misleading.
However, on excerpted threads only a tiny fraction of people read the actual article, so this is a pretty routine occurance.

Two years of hearing about too few troops on the ground, inadequate armor, extended tours of duty and accelerated rotations back into combat have taken their toll, discouraging potential enlistees and their parents. These unreal b*stards. They create a problem, then "lament" the problem's existence. If this isn't treason, it's about as close as you can get without selling state secrets.

That is exactly what the story was saying. It didn't mention it specifically, but it made it clear that the real point of the article was to scare young people and parents.
And by the way, I read the whole thing.

The draft should have been in place since 9-12-01.
It won't be reinstated now without a political fight that would make the filibuster fight look like child's play.
I blame President Bush for missing the opportunity to keep the country united nearly four years ago. Instead of calling for National Service that would have included conscription, the American people were told to go shopping.
To: leadpenny
I didn't say that they were calling for a draft. This crappy article plays to the DU-types who crow that Bush is going to re-institute the draft. Don't you remember them during the last election? And yes...I did read the entire article.

It all goes hand in hand, Belive me!! Battles cannot be won by undiciplined armies and societies cannot survive with undiciplined citizenry!
You refer to as as "Social Engineering", but I assure you discipline intills confidence and pride in ones self. To me taht is certainly not "Social Engineering" it's growing up and accepting responsibility.
We called it "Pulling their Heads out of their A$$e$" I swear you could hear the "POP"!

If this country is attacked again, and it's a Nuke or a Chem/Bio Weapon - Bush won't need to call for a draft -- It will be time to take down the Muskets, and stand by.
I have no problem with a Draft!! The Dummos wanted to paint Bush into a corner just like they did to his Daddy and he fell for it. He should have answered their trash by saying that he would never implement the draft unless the country was in mortal danger and only with the approval of the Congress! That puts the Dems on defense and their Political A$$eS on the line!!
