CALPINE SELLS UK PLANT (SALTEND) TO INTERNATIONAL POWER
Reuters ^ | 30 May 2005

LONDON, May 30 (Reuters) - U.S.-based power producer Calpine Corp. (CPN.N: Quote, Profile, Research) has sold a British power station to the UK's International Power Plc (IPR.L: Quote, Profile, Research) and Japan's Mitsui & Co. Ltd (8031.T: Quote, Profile, Research) for 500 million pounds ($912 million), the Financial Times newspaper reported on Monday.International Power will take 70 percent of the Saltend unit under a partnership which will hand the other 30 percent to the Japanese trading house, the FT's Web site (http://www.ft.com) reported without citing sources.

No one from International Power could be reached for comment. A Mitsui spokesman said the company would announce a deal in a statement at 0200 GMT on Tuesday in Tokyo, but was unable to confirm details of the FT report. Calpine bought Saltend, a 1,200 megawatt gas-fired power station near the northeast England town of Hull, for 560 million pounds in 2001. Calpine had been seeking to sell off non-core assets and refinance much of its debt during the past three years as it struggled to recover from a credit crunch that followed the bankruptcy of Enron Corp. in December 2001.

Obviously you can post whatever you want, but if I'm not a stockholder in this company, why should I give a fat rat's ass?

How should I reply to a comment like that? With a measured, well-thought-out statement, OR, the response merited? LOL.

You'll have to do better than that to spread strife. You're not very good at it and profanity will not do the trick. Try again. Ha ha ha ha ha.

There are a whole lot of threads on FR that warrant such a reply. This isn't one of them.

What spreading strife? You posted an article that nobody except a stockholder would possibly be interested in and I was wondering if there was some other angle to it that might, just might, have some interest to anyone beyond stockholders. Why exactly would the sale of a foreign power plant have any interest whatsoever to anybody beyond a stockholder?

I'm bloody fascinated. Draw your own conclusions.

Did it occur to you that many people here research information of value that can not be readily found anywhere else? Free Republic rocks! It is where I have found incredibly valuable information. So, I return the favor whenever I believe I've found something credible. Take it or leave it. :-D

Ok, so your post was an obscure reference to an obscure sale of an obscure power plant. That's a good enough reason. What value it has to anyone who isn't a stockholder I still don't know but like I said in my first post, obviously you can post whatever you want :)

Who said anything about debate? I asked a simple question which was never answered.

Calpine (CPN) jumped up significantly today and continues to fluctuate. Some here would like to know about that. Have a nice day.

Harbet sued Calpine over this deal. The court in Nova Scotia just dismissed the case. News out this a.m. here:

ROFL...Harbet is probably one of the entities which tried to spread the bankruptcy rumor which caused theh stock to run down near 1.32. It helped me (buy) but hurt a lot of other people unnecessarily when they got margin calls (sell). Harbet should be taken to court and reamed out for pulling a stunt like that.

These guys are no relation to me that I am aware of. We may share a distant anscestor (in fact, that's likely). I appreciate you flagging me on this however.

PS: You mispelled the name. It's Harbert. No one ever gets that name right.

Oh yes, Harbert. Sorry. I'm afraid with the VERY bad earnings report for the 2nd quarter, the stock is going to drift down close to $3 pretty soon. It will probably recover a good bit for the 3rd quarter report as it has been very, very hot and is projected to remain that way through the summer.
