America still has a lot to learn. Its bold leadership helped end communism less than two decades ago, and the American leadership of the early 21st century is already allowing communism and repression to blossom yet again. This time, the threat is not directly European. Although Russia could re-fire its political machine at any time, the threat of tomorrow comes from Asia, specifically China. America enjoys good relationships with much of the continent, but Americans have every reason to be both frightened and angered by the threat of the Chinese empire.
Already, there is talk of a potentially new world order of the 21st century where China, and not America, drives global politics. Some Americans, particularly those on the far left, would have to find this pleasing. No longer does America have a global agenda. In many ways, America would become another Canada, a strong and influential nation, but a nation that is clouded by others. However, Canada is supported by other democracies. China is not a democracy, and given that the very theory of communism is one of the empires, America should not be elated at giving up the global stage; they should be frightened.
This nation is a bullish one. Although he never won, Theodore Roosevelts Bull-Moose Party would be a great way to describe the American people. We are ingenious; we construct things, both physical and societal, that can never be exactly imitated in this world. However, America has been a player in world politics for two reasons: commerce and freedom. The commercial side is easy to understand. America has always been at the front of invention and development. Most of the key inventions of the late 19th and 20th centuries came from America. Then, they were manufactured around the world. However, that is now changing as businesses in America delegate more of the invention making to China. In many economic areas, China now runs second only to the United States.
When it comes to freedom, things look different in the comparisons. America is a nation that has championed freedom from its inception, while China is a nation that has long struggled to obtain any semblance of representative government. Now, the communists have a stranglehold over the politics of that nation. Students who believe in a new day of democracy are shot. Priests who practice a religion can suffer brutal acts of torture. The Dalai Lama has been forced from Tibet, and the young nation of Taiwan, a nation that should be recognized by the world for its progress and freedom, faces a continuous threat from China.
How should America stand when it comes to China? Should our government stand back when and if China goes on the offensive with its new and strong military? I believe every American should ask these questions: Does America stand for torture? Does America stand for communism? Does America stand for the spread of AIDS? Does America want her interests threatened by a repressive communist nation? If the answer to these questions, and any question pertaining to the restriction of human freedom is no, then the American people should not continue to allow a non-democratic China to develop.
However, this question leads directly to the matter of solvency. Americans must offer a counterplan, and that plan must call for some changes in conservative philosophy. Trade with China must be restricted at once, as Americas businesses are fueling money into a communist nation. Once trade is restricted with China, though, America should give tax breaks to businesses who return jobs to the United States, thus limiting the problems of outsourcing. Also, America should pursue trade agreements with other nations, giving them economic carrots to protest Chinas repression.
Next, there must be an outcry from the international community, but it must not begin with them. There was a time when the United Nations stood for human rights, but that day is in the past. If the world is to be improved, it must be up to this great land of America to do this. America must begin, and then it must convince the G-8 and European Union Nations to support America and work against China. A completely surrounded China should then be subjected to covert actions by America. American covert actions were crucial in ending communism in the Soviet Union, and by fueling Christian, Buddhist, Capitalist, and Democratic groups within the Peoples Republic the Chinese communist government will be toppled in favor of several democratic institutions arising across the Asian continent.
This is quite similar to the actions America took to fight communism in the 1980s. The great empire of the Soviet Union was broken into numerous pieces. America cannot rest its laurels; the fall of the Wall in Berlin was a great accomplishment, but it is only temporary in the fight for American security and global freedom. Consider this a message to every citizen and lawmaker in America: do not forget China, and do not overlook the scourge of communism in this world. There is another evil empire in this world, and it is being fueled by the United States. That can and must be stopped if America wants a 21st century that can mirror the prosperity of the 20th century.
