Here's what I'm wondering: if McCain decides to run for Prez as an independent (say, after losing a Republican primary)... would he actually pull more votes away from the Democrat candidate or the Republican? Which side would benefit more?
Democrats -love- the guy. So do some squishy Republicans. I really don't know which side would have more squishy members breaking to his camp.

McCain won't do that. Third party candidates don't win election. And McCain is smart enough to know it. Even Teddy Roosevelt couldn't do it and he was a much bigger deal than McCain.
If he lost the presidency and he would then he'd be a senator without a party and Jumping Jimmy J demonstrated how smart that was.
It could be the one other time (Buckley/NY/'68) that a true conservative Republican won in a three-way race.
I don't know one single person who would vote for him; in fact, most people I talk to would actively work against him.
And on FR, I'm considered a "squishy" conservative.
