Brilliant short summary of a lot of the history since Marx. I can correct nothing - but of course could add to make it longer.

Is this all from your feeble brain or is it published? If not published - it would be good to shop it to TownHall.com members - or offer it to someone like Steyn, VDH, Coulter, Malkin or Noonan to brush up for real distribution.

I agree that this goes back further than the 50s, and you did a good job there. I'll tell you when your post really grabbed my attention: your "Communism is a replay..." paragraph.

When I was in 9th grade, I was (honestly) a communist - I thought so, anyway. I even put together a 10-minute presentation with all sorts of statistics comparing the success of East Germany vs. West Germany since the end of WW2 --- all true stats, but some of the time I had to choose them pretty carefully. Of course, E.Germany being much smaller than W.Germany made the percentages more dramatic for them in many cases, and that helped my deception enormously - if I had to use actual values that would have been a problem. I found I had a couple allies on my debating team that day for the discussion that ensued during much of that next semester. For the rest of my career in HS, I was known as the school's communist. Coincidentally (?), the year before that, I had "determined" that there was no such thing as God.

The next summer, I changed. I had an epiphany about religion that needs no recounting here. In addition, and more to the point, I finally came to realize that communism was GREAT - IF AND ONLY IF people were PERFECT. With that premise (obviously) torn out from the foundation of communism, the whole structure comes tumbling down, as your third paragraph infers, and the fourth depicts. Though I still had the reputation of "communist" in HS from those who heard about the audacity of a student dressing down a teacher as I had, during those latter years, I was anything but, as those who knew me would testify.

In my Ivy League college in the late 60s early 70s, I was completely immunized from the socialist propaganda, as a result of my having been rather precocious, and very presumptuous, as a teen. I endured criticism for ROTC, countered "liberation theology", and checked drug users in my circle of acquaintances. The whole key is that single paragraph.

People are not perfect. Those who neglect that obvious fact are doomed to espouse socialism, and socialist "solutions", and failure. Any policy thinking that neglects that fact is unsound. We have to always acknowledge the Seven Deadly Sins.

This execrable creep's subversion in time of war, coupled with Woodward's, Bernstein's, Martha Graham's, Ben Bradley's, Bill Moyers and that of the entire "Democrat" potty et al, cost our nation more than the combined cost of the Cartah and Cli'ton "administrations" -- and the lives of millions of South-East Asians -- and must not go unpunished nor make any of them a net Cent!

Marcus Tullius Cicero A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist.

I was just thinking what a great thoughtful thread this was. You guys are making excellent comments.

I'm intrigued that Woodward was working in Moorer's office during the Radford spy thing.

One thing I keep trying to hammer at in these threads is that Woodward is an extreme right winger. I get really ticked off when we, and the left try to act like it was just liberals out to get Nixon.

Woodward was always a Republican. Always. Young Republican. Secret Society Member at Yale. Military officer. Admiral Moorer protege.

We will not understand Watergate until we understand the people like Felt, Woodward, and Moorer, who weren't burning bras and smoking dope in the 60's. That was Carl Bernstein, who was a dupe along for the ride.

This was a military/spy agency coup. Not by all the military/spooks but by a cabal within them. Woodward was a civilian for a year and a half when Watergate hit. You don't get tossed into the Pentagon by Admiral Moorer for giggles.

Woodward was/is one of them.

Felt's illegal leaking of FBI files was due to avarice, not nobility.

Now that's something that needs to be plastered all over creation.

A read of political history shows that lefty Abzug was defeated by her own avariciousness to hold public office----her campaign staff harassed her constituents in the days leading up to election day----so much so that they voted her out.

There's still a lot to this story we aren't being told. If Felt really was so concerned about secrecy of his meetings with Woodward, who was monitoring Woodwards balcony and who was intercepting Woodwards copy of The New York Times to write the time for a meeting?

To me, Felt could not have done it (monitoring Woodwards balcony and interception of Woodwards New York Times) as he would have known that he would be a suspect and might be under surveillance. Someone else had to be doing that. Felt had to have others helping him.

This was a military/spy agency coup

Now we know of at least two times that the President has been "Hoovered" in the White House.

I agree with what Nixon did 100% btw. You had these people in the CIA/Pentagon/FBI who thought they were a world all to themselves, answerable to nobody. They didn't consider themselves us. They were FBI/CIA/Pentagon first, americans as an afterthought.

By taking power from them, installing people friendly to the administration, it pissed them off to no end. But so what?

Nixon was elected president. His policies were to be followed, not the careerist Hoover loyalists.

I read that Abzug wasn't very popular with her office staff either. She treated them like dirt.

Which of course they were, or they wouldn't have been working for her in the first place.

I'm glad he came forward. The mask is off.

I'm glad also

IMO ... There is more to Woodward then we all know about

Though, I get the feeling we soon will find out what really was up back then

And THAT Ladies and Gentlemen ... is what the Big story about Watergate will really be about

Nixon's administration was the most corrupt Presidency of all time.

You seem to have bought the Woodward and Bernstein drivel hook, line and sinker. Either that, or you don't know your American History. Ever hear about the Teapot Dome Scandal under Harding? Or Secretary of War Belknap's corruption under the Grant adminisitration?

Making such sweeping generalizations without substantiating them is pure hyperbole.
