U.S. confirms Gitmo soldier kicked Quran
Arizona Daily Star - AP ^ | Jun 3, 2005 | ROBERT BURNS

By ROBERT BURNS AP Military Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Pentagon on Friday confirmed for the first time that a U.S. soldier deliberately kicked a Guantanamo Bay prisoner's Muslim holy book in violation of the military's rules for handling the Quran.

In other confirmed incidents, prison guards threw water balloons in a cell block, causing an unspecified number of Qurans to get wet; a guard's urine splashed on a detainee and his Quran; an interrogator stepped on a Quran during an interrogation; and a two-word obscenity was written in English on the inside cover of a Quran.

The findings are among the results of an investigation last month by Brig. Gen. Jay Hood, the commander of the detention center in Cuba, that was triggered by a Newsweek magazine report - later retracted - that a U.S. soldier had flushed one Guantanamo Bay detainee's Quran down a toilet.

The story stirred worldwide controversy and the Bush administration blamed it for deadly demonstrations in Afghanistan.

Last week, Hood disclosed that he had confirmed five cases of mishandling of the Quran, but he refused to provide details. Allegations of Quran desecration at Guantanamo Bay have led to anti-American passions in many Muslim nations, although Pentagon officials have insisted that the problems were relatively minor and that U.S. commanders have gone to great lengths to enable detainees to practice their religion in captivity.

Hood said last week that he found no credible evidence that a Quran was ever flushed down a toilet. He said a prisoner who was reported to have complained to an FBI agent in 2002 that a military guard threw a Quran in the toilet has since told Hood's investigators that he never witnessed any form of Quran desecration.

so what if this happend to a paperback "Mein Kamp" in a pow camp or a "Bushido" or Shinto text during WWII... who frickin cares... it's a book. Deal with it. Take them away. Why give them Sh#t...?????

They blow them up when they kill muslims in a temple... the only reason this is a big deal is for propaganda against us.. screw them.

Screw the NYT and all the MSM for even caring about this NON STORY.... f/ckem all..

Gawd this is such a load!!!

The muslims already hate us... but the libs in this country want us to look bad because of Bush.... they could care less about the troops killed since its ALL BUSHES FAULT for sending them over there.

You know, this is war.. all libs are anti Americans we need to boycott, ignore, and basically do everything in our power to destroy these scum. Let them speak freely. Then hit them in the pocketbook. All companies that support this crap.... destroy them. All papers and networks, they are willing to kill Americans to continue their propaganda war... boycott and flame away with letters. Whew!... that got my bp up.

Look at the headline.. Pentagon confirms Quran incident at Gitmo nothing in this story says anything about flushing it down the toilet so how is it confirmed? Misleading headline? MSM at it again?

Exactly. I was just going to say the same thing.

The only "Koran incident" that comes to most people's minds is the Newsweek story about a Koran being flushed down a toilet. When anyone (including me) reads a headline "Pentagon Confirms Koran Incident" the first thing that comes to mind is that the Pentagon confirmed the Newsweek story about Koran flushing. Of course the article says nothing of the sort.

Another example of a misleading headline meant to confuse those who simply scan the headlines or hear the blow-dried news "personalities" read it on the air.

The MSM sucks.

Why is the Koran protected and the Bible is not? Why is the Bible not allowed in taxpayer financed institutions such as schools but the Koran is allowed at the taxpayer financed Gitmo?

Something stinks here.

Exactly my thought when I read the title. MSM really hates President Bush.

I'd go buy a koran and video tape myself peeing on it

Don't waste bodily fluids on it -- using it as a footstool is even more blasphemous, and it might help your back if you sit at the keyboard for long periods. A twofer!

Tomorows Headline in the NYT:

Liberals rejoice in firm evidence that US Soldiers kick a terrorist's Koran.

"I'm shocked" said Judy Woodruff.

"Inhumane" says Richard Gere

"I'm moving to France (again) - quote from Alex Baldwin

"This proves Bush wants to punish those terorists"! - Nancy Pelosi.

"What about our standing in the world"? John Frenchy Kerry

"Where's the UN"? Kofi Annan - oh wait that's me.

"Screw them - why are US tax payers sending them a Koran in the first place"? Dick Cheney

Confiscate the damn books and burn them.

And then use the terrorist prisoners as the subjects in wound ballistics testing. ......like the Strasbourg tests (except using goat-lovers instead of goats).

sadly, Newsweek is off the hook now. Howard Fineman can't contain his excitement right now on MSNBC.

The Whitehouse should just announce that as a result of these incidents, and in keeping with Islamic countries, the Koran will no longer be provided for inmates. They may listen to the radio where there will be 24/7 readings on audio tape of the Koran.

" No muslim prisoners get to have the Koran. Just ban them all together from POW camps."

Yup. They just promote/incite more violence. Burn'em all.

"The press is just trying to cause our president problems in the global community."

I agree. It's not about the Quran, it's about the liberal left getting Bush any way they can.

yes but the problem is that this is coming from the Pentagon, not some unamed source and not simply a repeat of what a prisoner said.
