U.S. confirms Gitmo soldier kicked Quran
Arizona Daily Star - AP ^ | Jun 3, 2005 | ROBERT BURNS

By ROBERT BURNS AP Military Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Pentagon on Friday confirmed for the first time that a U.S. soldier deliberately kicked a Guantanamo Bay prisoner's Muslim holy book in violation of the military's rules for handling the Quran.

In other confirmed incidents, prison guards threw water balloons in a cell block, causing an unspecified number of Qurans to get wet; a guard's urine splashed on a detainee and his Quran; an interrogator stepped on a Quran during an interrogation; and a two-word obscenity was written in English on the inside cover of a Quran.

The findings are among the results of an investigation last month by Brig. Gen. Jay Hood, the commander of the detention center in Cuba, that was triggered by a Newsweek magazine report - later retracted - that a U.S. soldier had flushed one Guantanamo Bay detainee's Quran down a toilet.

The story stirred worldwide controversy and the Bush administration blamed it for deadly demonstrations in Afghanistan.

Last week, Hood disclosed that he had confirmed five cases of mishandling of the Quran, but he refused to provide details. Allegations of Quran desecration at Guantanamo Bay have led to anti-American passions in many Muslim nations, although Pentagon officials have insisted that the problems were relatively minor and that U.S. commanders have gone to great lengths to enable detainees to practice their religion in captivity.

Hood said last week that he found no credible evidence that a Quran was ever flushed down a toilet. He said a prisoner who was reported to have complained to an FBI agent in 2002 that a military guard threw a Quran in the toilet has since told Hood's investigators that he never witnessed any form of Quran desecration.

The big question is, why is the Pentagon, and those commanders at Gitmo even discussing this with anyone let alone the press?

Why do we even allow them to have these items. How are these things being leaked from a super secure installation? Are we allowing these leaks? Are we being compromised by allowing the wrong people into speak with these prisoners? Do the commanders at this super secure installation understand that this type of information only hurts us and completely undermines any good.

Just got home---TV on MSNBC---they are calling this a document dump on Friday to escape the MSM from being able to question them--

Barry McCaffrey, MSNBCs military "hitman" against anything Bush does re: Iraq, said that the "civilian heads" at the Pentagon NEED TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THIS....

According to MSNBC this is like a "smoking gun" of all that is wrong with the whole dang war!!!!

"I must confess when I first started reading this I looked for the Scrappleface heading. Especially, the part about the water balloons."

Ha, ha. I was thinking the same. What will they do to abuse the prisoners next? Hot pepper gum? Joy buzzers? Whoopee cusions? Black hand soap?

I agree. You may as well give convicted arsonists some boxes of matches.

the federal courts allowed these prisoners lawyers, and the Pentagon itself is falling all over itself to launch investigation after investigation. the entire government structure is full of liberal "activist moles".

The Pentagon said last week that there were 5 cases of Koran mishandling and 19 cases of Koran abuse by the detainees.

This is just the details of the cases. In my opinion, it does not vindicate Newsweek, but who cares.

These are clearly minor cases, but the media will use it to indicate Newsweek is innocent.

Oh, good grief. These people are ridiculous. No, not ridiculous. They're deliberately undermining our war effort. They're evil.

they are focusing only on what the guards did - look, you and I both know how they play the game. the terrorists could get together and burn the Vatican down, but getting a Koran wet is more important.

we need the President to speak bluntly on these topics, as in the example above.

Muslims blow up the Koran... while blowing up other Muslims.

Seems like we have more respect for the Koran than they do!

Since they know international eyes are on this, they could avoid IMO abusing their Mood god holy books.

This does not need to be vented in public. All it does is cause more violence from moon god people and they are unstable to begin with.

"Barry McCaffrey, MSNBCs military "hitman" against anything Bush does re: Iraq, said that the "civilian heads" at the Pentagon NEED TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THIS...."

They're beating a dead horse. Most Americans, given the chance, would piss on the Koran.
