For about a month now, the leftwing blogosphere has been atwitter about the Downing Street Memo. For the Michael Moore/DU crowd, this memo offers rock solid proof that "BUSH LIED!!!!" about the liberation of Iraq. The bit in the memo which has leftwingers salviating over the prospect of an impeachment is this:
Bush wanted to remove Saddam, through military action, justified by the conjunction of terrorism and WMD. But the intelligence and facts were being fixed around the policy. It is said that this is the proof...that bit about intelligence and facts being "fixed" is the "smoking gun" and we're now well into the new Watergate. There are a couple problems I see with this:
First off, we've had ample evidence that there was not political manipulation of the intelligence data prior to the liberation of Iraq. As we reported here, the WMD commission concluded there was no such "fixing" of the facts as the Memo claims.
Secondly, that sentence "But the intelligence and facts were being fixed around the policy" seems a bit odd, doesn't it?

How many votes in the Senate and House would be required to impeach the President? Is it possible to impeach the President with a majority of Republicans in the House and Senate?
The fact that one man expressed the opinion that "the intelligence is being fixed around the policy" doesn't really mean much of anything at all and I think this is beyond ludicrous that the Democrats think they have any evidence at all let alone a "smoking gun".
This is much ado about nothing in my opinion.
I tend to agree...but it looks as though the Democrats might drive off that impeachment cliff....
I'd be VERY suspicious of any "memo" being pimped by the Lefties. Those people do a lot of drugs and we already know all we need to know about DemocRAT "memos."
IMO... they'll disgrace themselves even more going this route. America does NOT want Congress wasting its time on this. Further -- the lines in this country have been drawn -- there is no middle-of-the-road anymore... and both sides have nothing to discuss.
Instead of Blue & Grey it is Red & Blue... so be it.
Good, this should be fun to watch :-)
In an otherwise clearly written memo, you've got one really strangely worded sentence which sorta-goes along with Donk attitudes about the President...I'm mighty suspicious.
They do seem to want nothing but fight, fight, fight...
We'll give 'em one...
WAIT WAIT WAIT we are still counting in OHIO says BOXER
uh,..... because the MM/DU Crapweasels don't understand that in the parlance of the folks that used it "fixed" means focused, centering, concentrating not the "fixed" that the MM/DU Crapweasels are so used to using the word, as in fixed elections, fixed accounting records, fixed.... well you get the idea.
I overheard some lefty loons 'discussing' this recently. From what I can gather (as I don't visit left wing socalist conspiracy theory groupthink websites like DU), the only evidence is...the memo. Which in itself is basically a report by a Blair aide that contains no quotes or any other facts that would prove anything.
Granted, embittered losers like John Heinz - Kerry would not need proof or logic...all they are concerned with is the ends, not the means. Compare this to the Clinton impeachment, where evidence was...well, all over the place. Had to say it.
After the CBS and Newsweek debacles, among others, I think the so called 'mainstream' media may be a bit gun-shy about getting behind this one. Only the truly extreme (Airhead America, Howie Dean) will bite. And then hopefully choke on it as the majority of Americans see what is really going on here.
I tend to stay away from DU, too...this story was first brought to my attention by a regular reader of the blog who noted that al-Jazeera was carrying it...then I picked it up on Newsmax and ran with it. In the end, I don't think anything will come of it other than a complete meltdown on the part of the Democrats.
And leaked by the UK.
and how are you going to tell who from who?
With these Republicans, anything is possible.
I have spent a lot of time reading this memo and it is obvious to me that if it is real it may have been:
A cover your behind memo by Blair's government saying "the Americans were going anyway".
A memo intended to be leaked to Saddam to convince him that Bush was was going to attack him UNLESS he fully cooperated with all 17 UN resolutionis immediately.
A memo put together by several in Blairs staff that wanted to oust Saddam and convinced Blair and others that Bush had already made up his mind.
If you read the WHOLE memo, along with the conclusions, there are statements attributed to others in Blairs government that directly contradict the "fix" statement.
But this all may be nothing anyway, since if you look up the definition of "fixed" it means so solidify, amend, repair. I see this as probably one man's statement that the orders are out to "fix" the intelligence means simply to refine the intelligence we already have by getting rid of that we are very unsure of, qualifying that which we may believe, and firm up what we do know for certain.
