Man with concealed-carry permit shoots gunman
Dayton Daily News | June 4, 2005 | Kelli Wynn

DAYTON | Two men carrying guns approached a 40-year-old man at Riverview Avenue and Catalpa Drive early Friday. Their victim bent over with outstretched hands.

Then things changed swiftly.

The targeted man pulled out a Glock 23 handgun — he has a concealed-carry permit — and fired several shots, hitting one of the gunmen, police said.

Police were dispatched to the 2000 block of West Riverview at about 12:45 a.m. on numerous calls about a shooting.

Police found the 40-year-old male victim at his Dayton residence. He told them that he was walking west on Riverview when he was approached by two males in dark clothing coming from Catalpa. One shoved the victim, the victim turned around and both men in dark clothes flashed handguns, police said.

The victim then "began to back away in a bent-over position with his hands outstretched," according to a police report. Then he pulled out a Glock 23, a .40-caliber handgun, striking one gunman several times, police said.

The two ran off, but police said they caught up with possible suspects at Good Samaritan Hospital.

The victim has both a Dayton Firearms Owner's Identification Card and Montgomery County Concealed Carry Card, police said.

Now that's gun control.

But did he shoot him or just "strike him" with the weapon? Pistol whipped? I think I know the answer, but the reporting does leave this an open issue.

A 23 is pretty darn big to conceal.

Here's a little more info from a Dayton TV station.

An attempted armed robbery takes an odd twist and one of the suspects ends up in the hospital. This all happened just before one Friday morning at the intersection of Catalpa and Riverview in Dayton. This story is complicated and police are still sorting things out.

Officers were called to the intersection on a report of an armed robbery. When they arrived the robbery victim told them he was approached by two men carrying guns. That is when he pulled out his own gun and began shooting at the suspects. Several rounds were exchanged between them. One of the suspects was hit. The men then got into a vehicle and drove away. They showed up minutes later at Good Samaritan Hospital where police took two of them into custody, the third was rushed into emergency surgery.

“He had four wounds, the most serious one being to stomach region. We took two other juveniles into custody there. The person that was shot was taken in for emergency surgery,” said Lt. Michael Martin.

All three suspects in this crime are juveniles. On top of the attempted robbery, police say the vehicle they drove to the hospital was stolen. Detectives are interviewing the two taken into custody.

So three young punks driving a stolen car, one is plugged full of holes and the other two are arrested and the stolen car is recovered.

Police found the 40-year-old male victim at his Dayton residence.

He may be charged with a crime for simply not calling the police.

I'm not saying he should have, mind you, but the police may see it that way.

Either way, thumbs up to him!

Very poor reporting of the obvious.

I'd say the reporter might soon get a call to join the NYT editorial board.

hell just the fact that they portrayed the 40 yr old guy as the victim in this is enough for me. It IS the Dayton Daily News after all :-)

I think he did call the police from his home to report it.
It's hard to tell from this sloppy reporting, but how else would the police know where the guy lived?

Another thing we find in the article way down near the bottom is that there were 3 suspects arrested.

What makes you think he didn't call the police? The police did know who he was and where he lived!

As has been said before, an armed society is a polite society.

These punks attempted to rob this citizen only because they assumed he was unarmed.

You're right. I just assumed there were witnesses.

As with the "strike," with this article you're left to fill in the details yourself.

(my interpretation) Prosecutor : "darn it! We just lost the opportunity to spend $100k to prosecute the robber and lock him up" "DArn those CCW permits!"

Whats wrong with the right to have a speedy trial? Looks like justice was served. And lots of tax money saved.
