What a storm!

MARQUETTE - A Marenisco man was happy to be alive this morning after a tornado that crossed Lake Gogebic Sunday night lifted back into the sky just before hitting his home.

"It was sunny. I just went to turn on The Weather Channel and my wife screamed, 'Look what's coming,'" said Bill Richards. "It was on us instantly. It lifted the boat, the dock and the lake all at once. I could see the bottom of the lake."

My father was just telling me about this. I don't remember hearing about too many twisters in the Upper Peninsula.

I thought you were posting about the storm we are having in Little Rock, LOL.

Checked out your home page to see where you live, and your hobbies are very sweet, except for the "Target Practice"...You slid that one in pretty nicely..LOL.

My parents live about three hours from where this happened. I was just talking with my father on the phone, he told me about this story and I looked it up. My first post of an article, I think. I hope I did it right!

In our neck of the woods, in lower Michigan, there were a few twisters but not extensive damage. Just enough excitement to get us in the basement a couple times, but we never lost our power. Kinda nice, being in a rural area where you can't flush if you can't pump.

I don't think the UP gets hit often either. Too far North usually.

I know the Saginaw/Bay City/Tuscola County areas got hit bad.

And there was a tornado in Three Oaks, Dan (which you know.) I haven't heard about its aftermath, but don't think that anyone was harmed. Yesterday's weather pattern on the southern tip of Lake Michigan and to its east was WEIRD and spooky.

What the hell?
Tornadoes on Lake GOGEBIC?

You have just proven global warming to this doubter. Time to start buying up that Lake Superior waterfront before people realize the lake's getting warm enough to swim in.

By North, I was referring to the Great Lakes influence on the weather systems in Michigan. Lake Michigan especially. Saskatchewan is the praries so it doesn't surprise me that there are twisters there.

Tornadoes on Lake GOGEBIC?

You've been there? It's the one region of my state I've never been to. I've only been to the Eastern UP. I'd like to get up there someday.

Dan, remember that old Michgan aphorism:

I guess it depends on what your definition of bad is. As far as I know, there wasn't really extensive property damage. Twisters were spotted but must not have touched down much if at all. A few power poles tipped over on Tittabawassee and Gratiot. One place on Tittabawassee, a private residence, had three flag poles along the front and it looks like all three were snapped off but lying right on the ground, they didn't travel far. There are trees down but not "uprooted" like they say on the news. Uprooted to me means picked up and taken to the next yard over and dropped there. There is a toolshed over near Mackinaw on the way to Delta College that is spread over an acre or two of land. I don't mean to minimize these things, it's expensive to pick up pieces of buildings and remove downed trees, and replace the contents of your freezer when the power is out for a day or two. But it could have been so much worse! Right where we are it was pretty mild, our 100 plus year old oak didn't even lose a branch, which is good since it overhangs our garage.

This guy on Lake Gogebic says he saw the lake bottom, as the tornado sucked water up along with his boat. I can't imagine viewing something like that with dry pants! It gives me an appreciation for these storms and what they can do, and also makes me quite glad we don't live in an area where there are hurricanes.

I have been in every county and on half the islands to boot (not Isle Royale).

You should put me on your Michigan ping list.

"Dan, remember that old Michgan aphorism:

Yeah, but way up there it's more like "Nine months winter, three months poor sledding..."
