19-Year-Old Stepped On Stomach While Girl Punched Self

LUFKIN, Texas -- A 19-year-old East Texas man faces a life prison sentence for causing his teenage girlfriend to miscarry twins, even though she wanted to end the pregnancy. Gerardo Flores was accused of causing the miscarriage by stepping on his girlfriend's stomach. He was prosecuted under the state's new fetal protection law.

Erica Basoria acknowledged asking Flores to help end her pregnancy. But the 17-year-old can't be prosecuted because of her legal right to abortion.

The defense contended that Basoria punched herself while Flores was stepping on her, making it impossible to tell who killed the twins.

The jury reached a verdict after deliberating four hours. Because prosecutors declined to seek the death penalty in the case, Flores received the automatic life sentence.

This may be a duplicate, I tried a search but couldn't find anything... So, both the father and mother equally participate in murdering these children, but only the father is punished...? Wow.

Woman who punched her own stomach or gets a late term abortion - no problem.
Man who punched or steped on stomach - life imprisonment.

This bipolar approach must be remedied - probably at the supreme court in a few years...

There's so many things wrong with that story, I don't even know where to start.

What evil, evil people.

I can't believe that even one of them got justice.

Gerardo Flores is probably kicking himself for not getting a medical degree before this stunt - if he had, he would have gotten off scot free.

I think we are going to need a few more facts before we can all comment. The info given, of course, sounds absurd. The problem with this type of reporting of legal cases is that without knowing all the facts, allegations, witnesses, and charges, all we get is the summary, which defies logic.

One thing is for sure, both of these people are severely troubled.

I guess you have to have a medical license and take the Hippocratic oath in order to murder babies in the uterus without consequence.

take the Hippocratic oath

You mean this one?

Hippocratic Oath -- Classical Version

I swear by Apollo Physician and Asclepius and Hygieia and Panaceia and all the gods and goddesses, making them my witnesses, that I will fulfil according to my ability and judgment this oath and this covenant:

To hold him who has taught me this art as equal to my parents and to live my life in partnership with him, and if he is in need of money to give him a share of mine, and to regard his offspring as equal to my brothers in male lineage and to teach them this art - if they desire to learn it - without fee and covenant; to give a share of precepts and oral instruction and all the other learning to my sons and to the sons of him who has instructed me and to pupils who have signed the covenant and have taken an oath according to the medical law, but no one else.

I will apply dietetic measures for the benefit of the sick according to my ability and judgment; I will keep them from harm and injustice.

I will neither give a deadly drug to anybody who asked for it, nor will I make a suggestion to this effect. Similarly I will not give to a woman an abortive remedy. In purity and holiness I will guard my life and my art.

I will not use the knife, not even on sufferers from stone, but will withdraw in favor of such men as are engaged in this work.

Whatever houses I may visit, I will come for the benefit of the sick, remaining free of all intentional injustice, of all mischief and in particular of sexual relations with both female and male persons, be they free or slaves.

What I may see or hear in the course of the treatment or even outside of the treatment in regard to the life of men, which on no account one must spread abroad, I will keep to myself, holding such things shameful to be spoken about.

If I fulfil this oath and do not violate it, may it be granted to me to enjoy life and art, being honored with fame among all men for all time to come; if I transgress it and swear falsely, may the opposite of all this be my lot.

Translation from the Greek by Ludwig Edelstein. From The Hippocratic Oath: Text, Translation, and Interpretation, by Ludwig Edelstein. Baltimore: Johns Hopkins Press, 1943.

I don't understand what crime he committed, other than practicing medicine without a license.

Practicing (what passes for) "medicine" without a license.

Sometimes, I think people should have to apply for a license before receiving functional reproductive organs.

Double Murder.
And for that, the law should requre hanging.
But the law is an ass.

This is one of the most amazing sexist applications of a double standard I've ever seen.

And all in the name of not offending the Roe v. Wade supporters. Wonderful.
