Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) criticized Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean Wednesday night for using "religion to divide."
Obama told reporters gathered at the Rock the Vote awards dinner at the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C., that Dean needs to tone down his rhetoric. Dean said on Monday that the Republican Party was "pretty much a white, Christian party."
"As somebody who is a Christian myself, I don't like it when people use religion to divide, whether that is Republican or Democrat," Obama said. "I think in terms of his role as party spokesman, [Dean] probably needs to be a little more careful and I suspect that is a message he is going to be getting from a number of us," Obama explained.
"We are at a time in our country's history that inclusive language is better than exclusive language," he added.
Former Democratic National Committee Chairman Terry McAuliffe, also attending the Rock the Vote event, empathized with Dean.
"I was [DNC] chairman for four years -- it's a tough job -- he's doing a great job," McAuliffe told Cybercast News Service.
"I gave one piece of advice [to Dean]. I said 'Howard, you are about to become a human fire hydrant,'" McAuliffe said, referring to a conversation he had with Dean before he became DNC chairman.
Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona seemed pleased that Dean had made the latest in a series of controversial statements.
"Howard Dean is the gift that keeps on giving," McCain told Cybercast News Service outside the Rock the Vote event.

Doesn't McCain realize that HE is "the gift that keeps on giving" to the DNC, as he undermines President Bush and the RNC at every turn? Aren't there any mirrors where John McCain lives?
Do not be fooled. He'd have you in chains doing a lockstep day and night.
McCain has to make a comment on everything. Can he just STFU?
As the presumptive VP candidate for the presumptive DemPrez candidate (Hillary) it is no surprise that he is trying to make himself appear moderate. So is she.
Most politicians are willing to comment; he's just the one they report.
Exactly. Obama is a leftwinger, just like Hillary, but he knows he must not appear as such if he is to ever run for President.
Yes, but he doesn't appear in them.
Obama is a muslim sleeper who doesn't want his mission thrown off track. He doesn't get to be Hitlery's VP if Dean is head of the DNC.
Totally uncalled for.
" Dean does hurt the rest of the Democrat party by alienating Christians"
Which is precisely why I hope Dean keeps his job. As much as it pains me to say it McCain is right. Dean is a real gift to the GOP. (McCain on the other hand is a real gift to the Democrats.)
Even a stopped clock is right twice a day.... let's not deny McCain got this one right.
This is so ironic I am nearly speechless. Guess McCain thinks that all the moderate Dems and Independents that Dean is alienating will flock towards him. Maybe he's correct if he runs as a third party candidate, but he's got NO CHANCE as a Republican. He is the "gift that keeps on giving" for the Rats. He needs to leave our party pronto!
But there can be no doubt that the kind of Christianity Obama has been involved in in the past is of a flaky variety.
And his support of already-born 'abortions' aka infanticide should give anyone pause.
"You will know them by their fruits."

Wow...thanks for providing the link. I apologize profusely (inserting knee back into leg)
Well there's a start. I've never heard a liberal use the buzzword "inclusive" to include traditional Christian believers.
