Vikings Make 'Mistake' With Handgun

Jun 10, 2005 7:37 am US/Central

(WCCO) Two stars of the Minnesota Vikings made an embarrassing, but possibly dangerous mistake Thursday, involving a handgun.

Vikings quarterback Daunte Culpepper and running back Michael Bennett said they had planned to do some target practicing. They had rented a car, but when they returned the car, they forgot to take the handgun out of the car.

The two were caught having to explain the situation to the rental company and police.

Culpepper actually rented and retuned the car, but he had to call Bennett to come have him pick up the gun at the airport.

The gun was registered to Bennett, who said he has a permit to carry a concealed weapon.

Bennett picked up the weapon, and no charged were filed. Police said he did not break any laws.

Bennett said he wants everyone to know he was not arrested, and he feels embarrassed about the situation.

Culpepper and Bennett were in town to attend a Vikings developmental camp.

The gun was registered to Bennett

It was not registered to Bennett. There is no firearm registry in Minnesota.

In fact, only five states register handguns.

You don't call the police. You call the previous renter that he may have left a personnel item.

MN doesn't require the person to ID his carry weapon when it issues the CCW permit, right?

For a handgun, I'd let the police notify the owner.

If one enjoys living in this feminized, nanny-state society of ours, one calls the nice policeman to get this big, nasty bad thing out of my sight before I scream. ;O\

I didn't know the Vikings had handguns. I always picture them more with swords.

I agree. If the Vikings had adopted the handgun sooner in place of battle axes and swords they could have ruled Europe.

oh wait...sorry...note to self, read article first.

What is with those Vikings? If they're not packing Whizzinators, they're packing heat.

Wisconcin doesn't have CCW. Besides, even if it did, this happened in MN, no?

Normally I would say that is the lame way out but you never know if the gun had been used in a crime. You know how those evil guns are, it could have rented the car under some other piece of equipment's name, they're sneaky that way.

Of course they could have looked at the previous renter and figure discretion is the better part of valor when dealing with 'celebrities' and let them answer the questions first. If they don't know nuttin, then call the cops.

"Culpepper actually rented and retuned the car, but he had to call Bennett to come have him pick up the gun at the airport. "

Look: Guns, airport, rental cars, assume tall swarthy men (football players), airport rental clerks.

If anything had happened, all you FR naysayers would be commenting on how stupid the rental company employees were NOT calling the police.

It is a non issue!!!!  They did exactly what they should have done.

A couple of Viking players were regulars at the Burnsville pistol range on HW 42 when we lived there.

possibly dangerous

To say that it is "possibly dangerous" after the fact just cracks me up.

Nope. Wisconsin doesn't have a handgun registry, either. According to the NRA, only California, Hawaii, Michigan, and New York register handguns.
