Joe Arpaio is putting Dogs in Jail.
Jack Gillum wrote an article for the The Arizona Republic Which we are not allowed to post in whole or in part.
so heres my summary of a very interesting story that you should take a look at...
Sheriff Joe Arpaio's is opening one of Maricopa's County jails for the housing of dogs and cats, scheduled for euthanasia.
He has moved inmates from the jail years ago to outdoor tents, in the 115-120 degree heat, and is using that same space to house the dogs and cats.
The sheriff says the dogs and cats, not his inmates, deserve air-conditioned facilities, since the animals are victims that did nothing wrong.
Mary Rose Wilcox, a county supervisor for District 5, is criticizing the flamboyant Arpaio for using the jail to house animals. She seems to be saying that the jails built for and funded for people should be what they are used for...
Attorney Nicholas Hentoff believes apparently that the sheriff inapproprietly labels all inmates as prisoners, whether they are convicted or still awaiting trial.
Hentoff says more about the intentional cruelty of Arpaio.
Arpaio feeds the animals in his jail a $2 daily ration of food, have music playing in their air conditioned cells. Whereas inmates are fed about .30 cents a day... Arpaio proudly announces at a press release. (on a local AZ radio station)
Even though those 'inmates' may be innocent people awaiting trial.

Who said it was against the will of the people?
Joe seems to get re-elected, so he can't be torquing off that many of his constituents.
I think the situation was that he inherited a jail building from his predecessors. He decided that he didn't want to use it, and I feel that most of the people agree with his decision.
While it may not be comfy for his prisoners, I bet it is actually safer for them than most jails. Based on no data at all, I have a feeling that the big tough prisoners do not get the chance to rape the small, young ones in Joe's jail. And they know that if they do, the consequences will be bad.
I am not concerned.
It's just interesting.
housing dogs in space designated for humans, in order to put the humans out in the desert... housed in tents.
The dogs and cats didn't break any laws and are not being punished. Their housing should is not a deterrent to teach them not to behave badly.
On the other hand, you have the prisoners....
Joe Arpaio is one of a kind. From what I hear, I trust him.
I miss the Jail Cam !
Btw, what is the recidivism rate for Joe's jail?
Sheriff Joe is a great guy!
THANKS for the report.
Why not?
What did the dogs do wrong?
It sends a good message.
Bump
Sheriff Joe is one of a kind. An elected official that does what he believes is right and let's the people decide {via tha ballot box} if they agree. He has been re-elected by hugh margins by the non-criminal voters for over 30 years. If the criminals outnumbered the non-criminal voters he would be defeated. The aclu and other lefties hate him but it's working and the people love him.
I love that. By doing this, he's sending a very clear message to the inmates about their position in the hierarchy of life. His point is to make sure they never want to come back. And he's doing a great job.
It would be interesting to see what funds Arpaio is using to feed the animals. If the revenue, ie., your and mine tax dollars by law, collected to feed prisoners and instead feeding animals, he's violating the law.
Many of the animals come in from animal cruelty cases. Our cat's mom was horrendiously mistreated until Shariff Joe rescued her and hundreds of other cats.

My original question remains: what is the source of funds he's using?
I don't know what budget the funds come from. I do know that the law requires animals that are rescued to be provided with water, twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, food daily and shelter from the weather and medical care when needed. That was on the web page I linked you to. I suppose you can call the county if you really want to know.
As a gov't auditor myself... if he is using legislated appropriated funds other than what was intended, he is in violation of the law.
"Mary Rose Wilcox, a county supervisor for District 5, is criticizing the flamboyant Arpaio for using the jail to house animals. She seems to be saying that the jails built for and funded for people should be what they are used for..."
Is this the very same Mary Rose Wilcox who got shot in the butt a few years back because some nut-case didn't like what she was saying? [Yes it is. There's only ONE butt-shot Mary Rose Wilcox.]
But if she opposes what Sheriff Joe is doing, then it's gotta be right.
