Sheriff Joe is very good at making the ACLU and their orbiting moon(bat)s into his own bad cop. He's doing this to provoke a reaction and -- win or lose -- he comes out smelling like a rose.

It's just interesting. housing dogs in space designated for humans, in order to put the humans out in the desert... housed in tents.

Would you believe that the mean old Army did that to me. Those damn people made me sleep on the ground. How amazing that me and a few million other poor souls survived.

Phoenix, go read about some of the things he has done to his opponents, he did some nasty things to Dan Saban in the last election.

The guy is as crooked as they come, if you go to the arpaio.com website, there are about 20 articles that go into detail about what he has done. Read up on the guy.

Yep, know about the election. He is a ruthless opponent. I don't make any appologies for him. He is what he is. I think most people who vote for him as Sheriff do so because, he does the job people what him to do and hasn't stepped over the line enough to get booted out. When he does, we will. Right now, there hasn't been anyone running against him that comes close to replacing him. Sorry, just the facts.

My son is about ready to go train in the California desert for 6 weeks then get shipped to the 'sandbox' for far worse than what the prisoners in Phoenix have to put up with. And he didn't do anything wrong. ;)

The dogs and cats didn't do anything wrong either. If we want to replace Tent City, we would. We wouldn't have to displace beaten pets to do it. Fact is, the people in this county think it is a good idea.

I hope Joe's cats and dogs have a high rate of adoption.

Wrong metaphor. He comes across like a Sheriff in the wild west. Which is what we like.

Well, keeping the guys from being raped is a blessing in and of itself. Also, I think this type of prison would make anyone not want to be a "guest" a second time.

On the message board, there is a story about the car crash. They also debunk Joe's claims, like he arrested Elvis once, and all his exaggerations about his past.

The family of Scott Norberg got over $10 million from him for the wrongful death, and a few others have sued and won millions, in fact, I don't think Joe has ever won a case. But, speak out against him, and he will send out his goons.

For those who are interested:

S.M.A.R.T. Tents (Shocking Mainstream Adolescents into Resisting Temptation)
S.M.A.R.T. Tents is Sheriff Joe Arpaio's innovative youth program. It was designed to impress upon juveniles the truth about social standards and that the law is no longer "just for adults" or "the other guy". In addition, this program teaches students the realities of jail before they find out for themselves the hard way.

The S.M.A.R.T. Tents compound is located adjacent to Tent City and replicates the living conditions of actual prisoners. It has the same surplus army tents that the inmates sleep in. With 10 bunk-beds per tent and a total of seven tents, SMART Tents can house up to 140 participants per weekend. The youths are bussed to the tents after school on Friday and are met by Sheriff's Office staff at the gate.

From that point on, they are treated just like the inmates. They don black & white striped uniforms, eat jail food, sleep like the inmates, and receive instruction on what jail life is like. Students, teachers, and parents actually spend the night and contend with strict discipline, jail food, surprise searches by Sheriff's canines, and consequences for improper conduct. The staff of SMART Tents provide instruction on juvenile law, consequences, resisting peer pressure, gang affiliation, and provide a tour of adjacent jail facilities to show the actual living conditions while incarcerated.

Your son will make it and become a better man for it just like millions of others. Basic training is rough, but doable. When it's over he will be a well trained soldier and we will all be proud of him.

Well, Dan Saban was doing pretty good, until Joe got a reporter from one of the TV stations to report that Dan raped his mother!

He will stop at nothing, there are a whole lot of sheep that think Joe is just the best, but they are blind. Something will break the camel's back, and when it does, everyone will wonder why he wasn't booted years ago.

And its not a liberal/conservative thing, lots of Republicans came out against him last time. Plus, he endorsed Janet for governer! His time will come, and when it does.....

Agree with you. Thankfully, due to age he finally might be on his way out.

The cult of Arpaio is truely frightening, folk who don't live here have no ide of the crap he has pulled, he owns lots of people in this town, Phoenix is as corrupt as Chicago sometimes.

I lived in Phoenix when Joe was first elected, but moved shortly after so I have no idea how he has evolved through the years- good or bad. I do know before he was elected crime in Phoenix was through the roof and people were being attacked in Mall parking lots while out Christmas shopping; in broad daylight and regularly. That is the background on why everyone wanted a Law and Order type sheriff to begin with.

One other note about my knowledge of Joe's tent city; I have a nephew in his 30's who has been in trouble since the age of 14. My nephew has been involved with drugs and most of the arrests he had were drug related. His mother has deep pockets and he mostly got a slap on the wrist punishment. Two years ago he appeared before a judge who had had enough and sentenced him to 90 days in Joe's tent city- during the summer months. My nephew has had clean drug tests since and for the first time seems to really want to face his problems and stay straight. So at least for my nephew it seems like Joe was the best thing to ever happen to him in his life.
