I met Hume Horan in Baghdad in September 2004. I was doing computer support for Bremer's staff and didn't have a place to sit. He offered me his desk when he wasn't there, which was frequently.
It was a joy to see the pleasant shock on the faces of the Iraqis who were part of the cleaning crew when Hume would speak to them. Most were stunned by his Arabic.
After I fixed a computer problem for him he insisted that I call him Hume instead of Ambassador Horan.
Everything about him either kind or classy. He also had a great sense of humor.
I meant to say September 2003.
