Family dead for 5 years found in flat

June 9, 2005

Police made a gruesome discovery in a Moscow apartment, finding the skeletal remains of four family members who apparently died at different times over a period of up to five years.

The bodies of an elderly couple and their daughter and granddaughter were found by a police officer who forced the apartment's door open because maintenance fees were long overdue, city prosecutor's office spokesman Sergei Marchenko said.

Coroners believe the man, who was born in 1912, died about five years ago, followed about two years later by his wife, while their daughter and adult granddaughter apparently died about two years ago, Marchenko said, stressing that the investigation results were preliminary.

Marchenko said a murder investigation was opened, but that it was a technicality needed to determine the causes of death.

Aside from the condition of the bodies, other evidence suggesting that the deaths occurred years ago included a 1997 calendar in the grandfather's room, old ruble notes that are now out of circulation and food in the refrigerator from 2003, Marchenko said.

It was unclear why neighbours had not noticed something was amiss in the apartment in south-eastern Moscow.

Wow. I stayed in an apartment in SE Moscow in August 2002. Some of these folks were already dead then.

Just creepy.

"Sure there was a stench coming out of their apartment, but they were such quiet neighbors, who was I to complain?"

Forget the neighbors, didn't the people who lived in the flat notice that their family members were dying one by one? Wow, it's been a year since Dad has left that chair, must be a good book he's reading.....

I'm confused, why would you leave the bodies of your dead grandparents rotting in the apartment? I mean, they died at different times, right? This is really bizarre.

But, they're not YOUR dead relatives, they're THE PEOPLE'S dead relatives. Let the people take care of it.

As usual, the government didn't do a damn thing, didn't even notice a damn thing, until they realized the dead family hadn't been paying taxes.

Maybe the remaining members were collecting pension benefits. Or they were just plain nuts.

Good grief. I hope this doesn't happen to my family. When someone dies, I am going to call 911 if I am not the first to go.

I wouldn't be surprised if the old man was either KGB or a turncoat or something and gave orders not to be found because he wouldn't want authorities to harm his family. So they left him there and apparently died off one by one.

I could also understand the wife being old enough to suffer dementia and not understand that her husband was dead even as he lay motionless nearby (that happened with an aunt of mine) but I don't understand the daughter and grand-daughter not doing something about the situation. They probably had no heat in the apartment either.

Glad you clarified with the "if I'm not the first one to go" part ;)

Reminds me of that joke Reagan would tell with the Russian car dealer and plumber.

If you ever feel that nobody cares if you are alive, try missing a few car or rent payments...

I guess this saying somehow didn't apply in this case.
