... the man, who was born in 1912, died about five years ago, followed about two years later by his wife, while their daughter and adult granddaughter apparently died about two years ago

I suppose the neighbors just eventually got accustomed to the smell. They had plenty of opportunity.

Seriously, my uncle died from a heart attack on his front porch at age 92. He stayed there for two days before anyone tried to help him. My aunt thought he was telling her to "stay down" until the threat was over.
