Boulder police say when they arrested a man for failing to register as a sex offender, they discovered that he was in possession of more than 20 house and apartment keys.
Investigators are in the process of figuring out how Patrick Gillespie, 32, obtained so many keys while he appeared to be living out of his van.
They say Gillespie had each key labeled with an address and a hand drawn map of the residences. Most of the addresses came from homes and apartments in "The Hill" area of Boulder.
"He had about 20 keys on him, so yes, there could be a lot more people affected," said Julie Brooks, a spokeswoman for the Boulder Police Department. She said some of the keys worked on the locks they tried, but not all.
Gillespie is being held at the Boulder County jail. He's now being investigated for theft, indecent exposure and other charges.
Not hard to figure out I would think. I bet I could find 20 keys in most any average suburban neighborhood simply by looking in the most obvious places. Doormat, rock, flower pot, etc. I would guess 10-15% of houses in a given neighborhood have a ground floor window or door unlocked.

I would have thought he would be obligated to register his residence address with the municipality (or whatever government body this law requires), but it appears that he doesn't have one? What, I wonder, is he exactly obligated to report if he is indeed living in a mobile vehicle such as a van with no fixed address?
Wonder if he had keys to Bonet house?
This is quite disturbing.
Real Estate office? People should change the locks when they move in...

Interesting thought.
You hit the nose right on the nostril. He has an accomplice in a local hardware store. People had extra keys made for their house/apt and were too lazy to wait around so they had them delivered. That's how they knew which key went with which address. That's why they're all from one one area of the city.
I was thinking maybe it was a locksmith.
