"Only 30 to 40 percent of black males graduate from high school."
Those are pretty good numbers. It shows they're making inroads.
I thought it was about 10%.
When I graduated from a very large "inner city" public high school in the pre-riot, pre Great Society 60s, it was probably 80% graduation rate for blacks, 85% for white "Christians" and 100% for Jews. We only had a handfull of "others" mostly sons and daughters of Asians who not only graduated, but ended up with full scholarship to Ivy League schools, as did some blacks, whites, and more than a few Jews.
BTW. That school was nearly a perfect melting pot for it's time. 20% black. 15% Jew. The rest white with probably a slim majority of those being ethnic Catholic. The economic spectrum ran from dirt poor, to the kids of upper middle class professionals. Racial/Religious/Ethnic tensions were something that did not enter the equation in any meaningful or memorable way.
I always thanked my luck stars that I was blessed with the opportunity to be in that environment and to learn with those "others" at a young age and before the time when the race hustlers figured out how to get wealthy by getting kids at each other's throats.
