You may be correct.

But in the case of the French, the "man on the street" can usually be summarized as being obstreperous, selfish, intolerant, ignorant, duplicitous, and arrogant.

My take is that the "man on the street' upset the elitist apple cart by just doing what they do best....reject it....In this case, "it" was something totally stupid...And so we can all smile.

LOL. I'm no fan of monarchies in general, but I agree with your statement.
