AHOSKIE, N.C. -- Two employees of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals have been charged with animal cruelty after dumping dead dogs and cats in a shopping center garbage bin, police said.
Investigators staked out the bin after discovering that dead animals had been dumped there every Wednesday for the past four weeks, Ahoskie police said in a prepared statement Thursday.
PETA has scheduled a news conference for Friday in Norfolk, Va., where the group is based.
Police found 18 dead animals in the bin and 13 more in a van registered to PETA. The animals were from animal shelters in Northampton and Bertie counties, police said.
The two were picking up animals to be brought back to PETA headquarters for euthanization, PETA president Ingrid Newkirk said Thursday. Neither police nor PETA offered any theory on why the animals might have been dumped.
Police charged Andrew Benjamin Cook, 24, of Virginia Beach, Va., and Adria Joy Hinkle, 27, of Norfolk, Va., each with 31 felony counts of animal cruelty and eight misdemeanor counts of illegal disposal of dead animals. They were released on bond and an initial court date was set for Friday.
Hinkle has been suspended, but Cook continues to work PETA, Newkirk said.
Newkirk said she doubted Hinkle had ever been cruel to an animal and said if the animals were placed in the bin, "We will be appalled."
These people care more about animals than the unborn. They are quite unhinged.
Too good, Hahahahahhahaha!
good!
There are laws for the disposal of dead animals. I wonder if this will hurt their fund raising.
Huh? PETA is euthanizing animals? If that's PETA's policy, why not let the shelters do that?
PETA is irrelevant....
The Norfolk Peta shelter has an 85% kill rate.
Yes, PETA is part of the "death with dignity" crowd.
They don't think animals should have to live caged up in shelters, so they rescue them and put them to sleep.
Penn and Teller had a good segment on this.
"People for the Ethical Treatment of (live) Animals"
That's better.
I also found out that the 2nd in command at PETA is a diabetic. Until about 15 years ago, all insulin was derived from animal pancreases. Now it is made in bacteria.
"Perverts for the Euthanizing and Torture of Animals (and unborn humans)"
Slap a multimillion dollar lawsuit against PETA for public endangerment.
Woooooe, this is bad on so many levels. I guess PETA just gets a charge out of offing puppies and kittens.
Actually, they think both are disposable. They lie about caring about animals.
Here's the local Virginian Pilot newspaper story on the PETA animal disposal flap: there's more details.

Last night's story on the local news said they've been finding animal carcasses in black plastic bags dumped in a dumpster for the past several months down in Ahoskie, NC. The PETA employees were caught redhanded dumping 31 dogs, but the county down there has already buried some 60 dogs and cats in a mass grave in addition to the 31 found in the bust.
Apparently, the animals were alive when they leave PETA's shelter and the morbid ghouls who are transporting them down kill the animals in the van while they're driving down. They dump the animals in a dumpster behind a Piggly Wiggly store down in Ahoskie. Police put up surveillance down there and caught the creeps who did it this time.
