RELEASE: It’s official: Ferguson, Plum to square off Nov. 8th

An already heated race became official when the Fairfax County Electoral Board certified Donny Ferguson, a Reston Libertarian, for the Nov. 8th ballot. Republicans failed to field a candidate.

“For the first time in nearly a decade, and for the first time since redistricting, voters have an alternative to the high taxes and increased traffic proposed by Ken Plum,” said Ferguson. “This district opposes his County Income Tax proposal and high taxes, traffic congestion and Tyson’s Corner-style development that are part of his expensive Metro plan.”

Ferguson faces Delegate Ken Plum (D) in the Tues., Nov. 8 general election for the House of Delegates’ 36th District. The two candidates have traded blows in local newspapers over Plum’s support of a County Income Tax proposal and Dulles toll increases.

Sic Semper Tyrannis, an online political journal covering Virginia elections, has rated the increasingly fractious race as a possible Ferguson win.

Plum’s June 1 weekly newspaper column attacked Ferguson for signing the Americans for Tax Reform’s “Taxpayer Protection Pledge” opposing tax increases. Ferguson’s pledge was witnessed by former Congressman Steve Stockman.

Plum shot back again with a letter to the editor of The Observer newspapers last week, responding to Ferguson’s opposition to the increased development, taxes and traffic congestion Metrorail is predicted to bring to the area.

Ferguson, 28, serves as staff to the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors and previously served in the office of Congressman Stockman, as well as non-profit groups like Judicial Watch and the National Right to Work Committee. Plum, 63, was first elected in 1977.

If this race could conceivably be won by a Libertarian, then why didn't the Republicans field a candidate?
