WASHINGTON GOP leaders called on their Democratic counterparts Friday to denounce the comments of Sen. Dick Durbin (search), who earlier this week blasted the Guantanamo detainee camp.
House Republicans sent House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (search) a letter asking her to publicly condemn the No. 2 Senate Democrat's comments.
"Does the speech made by Senator Durbin also reflect your views as the House Democratic Leader? If not, we respectfully request that you publicly renounce Senator Durbin's comments. These sorts of irresponsible comments send the wrong message to our soldiers," stated the letter signed by House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert, House Majority Leader Tom DeLay and three other GOP leaders.
And Sen. Sam Brownback (search), R-Kan., told FOX News that he thinks Durbin's remarks are "clearly over the top."
Brownback urged lawmakers critical of the Guantanamo Bay prison facility to back away from talk advocating the camp's closure. "I would really hope that most people would back away from that and start focusing on the War on Terror," Brownback said.
On Thursday evening, Durbin went to the Senate floor to repeat the controversial statement he made two days earlier and insist he said nothing objectionable.
In the remarks first expressed on the Senate floor late Tuesday, the Illinois Democrat read the report of an FBI agent who described treatment of prisoners at the U.S. military facility at Guantanamo Bay (search), Cuba.
....
"If I read this to you and did not tell you that it was an FBI agent describing what Americans had done to prisoners in their control, you would most certainly believe this must have been done by Nazis, Soviets in their gulags or some mad regime Pol Pot or others that had no concern for human beings," Durbin said.

But Durbin would aim way to the left and miss.
But he'd might have Hitlery or Puce Pelosi hiding in the bushes or behind a tree aiming at the heroic Marine. Just can't trust a demoncRAT. They relish stabbing in the back in some form.
Ping......
Where was Dick when the Branch Davidians were subjected to loud music and then gassed and burned alive.
Their problem is they were religeous. They were religeous nut jobs but their biggest problem was that they were not Moslems. Had they been Moslem nut jobs, Janet and company would have left them alone.
Thanks for the Ping
DeLay on the floor making a speech about UN.
Love the letter he sent!
Durbin is from Springfield, Illinois.
That's all they're good for.
WHAT!He made it up. What the heck is this?
Rush said this as well that the FBI is saying that Durbin read into it!
Don't we control the Senate? Has anyone thought about censoring the SOB?
It can start riots and more bombing in Iraq and other Mid-Eastern countries as well. He is beyond my ability to describe and still stay a FReeper. Our whole country and our military is in danger from remarks like that from our own Congressmutts.
It may be in the works, but we need to milk it for all it worth for awhile! Maybe he'll say even stupider things, but this bit about the questionable memo has just come to light and the Senate is not in session today. Monday could be interesting. Lott had to lose his position over much less.
Durbin Lied about the report???
Everyone Thinks Fox is so grand. This is so watered down and obfuscated thaty it might as well have been written by the commies at NBC/CBS/ABC/CNN.
In mid July during operation Greenlight at the USMC base at 29 Palms CA I was with the 1st Recon Bn, 1st MarDiv living in a shelter half in the middle of the desert where the temperatures went to 130 deg F. We had to live and work in that heat for the duration of the 30 day operation.
I remember getting our beer ration of two cans a day. The beer temperature was at ambient (130 deg). We put the beer cans in our spare socks and hung them in the open outside the comm tent. We would then periodically pour water on them so the socks would remain wet. The beer would then get cold via the process of evaporation.
No airconditioning, warm beer, C rations, forced to sleep on the hard ground in the middle of the desert.
I wonder if Senator Dick Dustbin would consider that torture.
It appears that this may be a possibility. I think Durbin should be required to turn over the "alleged" report.
I think they said that the memo only said that the prisoner was chained to the floor, the rest Durbin read into it.
In other words .. he made it up
THROW HIM OUT OF THE SENATE NOW!!!
He had the memo in his hand last night..Warner should have snatched it from him..
