Judge Strikes Down Ban on Single Beer Sales

Washington (AP) - Buying a single can or bottle of beer will still be legal in the near future in some parts of Northwest Washington.

A federal judge has struck down the District's ban on such sales in Ward 4, ruling that the D.C. Council hastily passed it last fall without the required public notice.

It was supposed to begin last November, but never took effect because the judge blocked its enforcement until the larger legal questions could be decided. This week, she struck down the law.

The measure was known as the Fenty Amendment after sponsor Adrian Fenty introduced it as a means to reduce litter and drinking on sidewalks. There are similar bans in the Mount Pleasant and Adams Morgan neighborhoods.

Fenty says he will ask the council to act again on the ban and that he will urge city lawyers to appeal the ruling.

Opponents say the ban would devastate mom & pop stores that count on single sales for as much as 50 percent of their income in some months.

Darwin, Australia is a great place. The Darwin Stubby is a local icon, but Darwin has a lot more to offer than just big bottles of beer.

For your information, the Labor Party headed by Claire Martin has just been returned in a big swimg in the Territory Election that was held yesterday.

Darwin is really kicking on and has a real "Can Do !' feel about it. They also have a great night market on the foreshore every Thursday night where 1/10th of the city's population gathers for food, music, fun and a wonderful sunset.

Is littering and disorderly conduct legal in NW Washington? If not, why don't they just enforce those laws?

Fenty is also hot on a smoking ban in DC. He is a smart guy but a committed socialist and he knows how to make things happen. He will be mayor within a few years. DC residents and commuters be advised.
