a means to reduce litter and drinking on sidewalks.

For every one can, there will now be five others.

I'm a beer "buyer" as my profession and I've never understood these restrictions. I've have retailers I work with whose beer licenses have restrictions on them that forbid them from selling singles. This makes no sense.

The alcoholic control board does this to keep drunks from buying singles and drinking them right then and there on the street. So what's the answer.... make them buy a six pack and drink it right then and there on the street? SMART!!!!

[The measure was known as the Fenty Amendment after sponsor Adrian Fenty introduced it as a means to reduce litter and drinking on sidewalks.]

B.S.

Every time you see a law like this that puts some tedious obstruction in the way of adults getting access to alcohol, you can be assured it's the prohibitionists trying to whittle away at our freedom for our own good.

In Massachusetts it is illegal for liquor stores to sell milk.

Micromanagement at its finest. We can still get singles, though we don't pollute with them.. Bottle bill and all.

We just dump old dish washers, water heaters and television sets on the side of the highways.. Local sticker laws and all.

And the thing about my jokes is, they don't hurt anybody. You can take 'em or leave 'em - you can say they're funny or they're terrible or they're good, or whatever, but you can just pass 'em by. But with Congress, every time they make a joke, it's a law! And every time they make a law, it's a joke! - Will Rogers

Opponents say the ban would devastate mom & pop stores that count on single sales for as much as 50 percent of their income in some months.

That is the likely target or something similar. The big boys don't want the competition and pay the politicians to do the job for them. Of course the politicians have to cover it with some high sounding principle. Anytime something like this comes up we must, all together now - "Follow the Money". Figure out who will gain financially, besides the politicians of course, and you have it.

Is littering and disorderly conduct legal in NW Washington? If not, why don't they just enforce those laws?

Fenty is also hot on a smoking ban in DC. He is a smart guy but a committed socialist and he knows how to make things happen. He will be mayor within a few years. DC residents and commuters be advised.
