Jossy Mansur, editor of Diario, said on FOX-TV that Steve Croese is "an able seaman", which means he knows how to skipper a boat like the Tattoo. He probably did fill in for the Captain on occasion.

I don't know about piloting the Tatto or any boat. I don't know who to believe anymore. But last night they interviewed a friend of Croes and he laughed when asked if Steve could have taken the boat. He said Steve cannot/could not drive the boat. Not a snickering laugh, genuine type. So I don't believe he has the capabilities.

A lot of ppl could drive a boat out in the open water, but getting it into and out of a slip or the dock area is pretty tricky if one does not have skill. If he was not trained to do that, I doubt he would have. Big liability.
