I was preparing to post a comment advising anyone traveling with children to be sure each had a whistle--to be used in emergencies only, not for fun--and to practice, practice, practice beforehand. And perhaps to tell the fable of The Boy Who Cried Wolf, impressing the danger of false alarms. But you did it best!

Yes! I haven't read all the posts carefully, but it would seem relevant to point out that Boy Scouts don't particularly get lost. Perhaps he was just a mite bewildered, rather than lost. In this age of GPS, it's telling that he didn't have a compass. Triangulation, back-bearings and things are useful in "staying found" as it were.
The child who was lost is a Cub Scout who was invited to accompany his neighbors, a Boy Scout and father.
Well! I'm sure he had quite an experience - but it still galls me that the "buddy system" failed, somehow. As leaders we are responsible every day for our charges - whether students or employees or the local populace et. al, thankfully 11 year old Cub Scouts are still made of sterner stuff. A night or two in the Uintas doesn't sound like a bad deal to me overall, just everyone should carry 'The Ten Essentials' even if out for an afternoon walk. To paraphrase Harvey Manning, when clouds loom and the day grows short and you're away from camp, a daypack or butt-pack and canteen goes a long ways to take the sting out things. Raingear, a lighter or matches, compass, some jerky and candy, a flashlight and bug dope makes anyplace bearable. Everything else is just gravy.
Yikes. I was just about to post that I thought everyone was being too hard on DU.
YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh I am soooo happy. Praise God!
I made up stories of 3 kids (Molly, Jessie, and JoJo) who are always getting lost. They then stay put, and their parents eventually find them.
My 3 kids are now 8 & 10 and they tell the stories themselves now.
At least, it's been a colorful way to explain what to do if they get lost.

...This good BOY SCOUT...

one report had part of an interview where the Scout said, I heard the horses feet and people calling out to me - two days ago." -- Makes me think the kid, who was hungry, was also hiding for the fun of the game.
Very good point!!!
Good to know. I quit the boy scouts at age 14. I regret that now. Though looking back, given the circumstances, I still think it was the right decision for the time.

Salt Lake Trib's story on finding the boy. Pretty good read, better info than Shep Smith or anyone else was giving out on TV yesterday.
