Prime Minister Phan Van Khai, whose visit to the White House today was the first by a Vietnamese leader since the end of the Vietnam War, said relations between the two nations have "entered a new stage of development."
Mr. Khai and President Bush announced at the meeting that Mr. Bush will visit Vietnam next year, making him only the second American president, after Bill Clinton, to visit the country since the end of the war in 1975.

In the '70s, Nixon was able to check Soviet expansion through Vietnam by opening relations with China. Now, we can use relations with Vietnam to check China's expansion in the region.
I know that stories like this must pain many vets. This must strike many as "trading with the enemy".

Yes it does. Myself for one. But like Sun-Tzu said most accurately (paraphrased): "Stay close to your friends, but stay even CLOSER TO YOUR ENEMIES!"
"Right this way Prime Minister Phan to you own private tiger cage."
"Anf=d all the rats you can eat!"
Again, I hope that GWB DEMANDED an accounting of ALL American POW's & MIA'S before he would visit Viet Nam next year.
The families deserve that much!

Actually, that's an "old Klingon proverb". "The enemy of my enemy is my friend" is more applicable here.
Are you sure that the headline is correct?
I'm sure that either Kerry or McCain have been to the White House.
Oh, I get it now, you meant, Vietnamese Vietnames, not Traitorous Americans supporting the Vietnamese. Sorry, my bad.
Did you know that John Kerry was in Vietnam? It's true!
Well McCain did serve in Vietnam, and endure torture at the hands of the commies. Say what you like of his RINO tendencies. He did bear true faith & allegiance during the war.
-- 'He did bear true faith & allegiance during the war.'
Perhaps he did, perhaps he didn't. He wouldn't be the first to have the Patty Hearst / Stockholm syndrome even if he wasn't the role model for the remake of the Manchurian Candidate.
His conduct after the war when he led the charge to abandon any remaining left behind shows that he didn't bear faith to his fellow soldiers.
His leadership of the McCain - Finegold First Amendment Repeal Act shows that he doesn't have faith & allegiance to the Constitution.
Similarly, his support of Open Borders and the various UN treaties calls into question his allegiance to America.
