D.C. Police Chief's Unmarked Police Car Stolen
ASSOCIATED PRESS
WASHINGTON (AP) -- District of Columbia Police Chief Charles H. Ramsey has personal insight into the city's car theft problem. The chief learned Sunday morning that his unmarked black 1999 Ford Crown Victoria was stolen not far from his home.
''When he went to go to the car to go to church, he discovered that it was missing,'' said Sgt. Joe Gentile, a D.C. Metropolitan Police Department spokesman on Monday.
The vehicle had been parked near Ramsey's home by another officer Friday evening while the chief was out of town. Investigators believe it could have been taken anytime between Friday night and Sunday morning.
Some police equipment, including a riot helmet and some clothing were in the car, but there were no weapons, Gentile said.
The Metropolitan Police Department is hoping a tip will lead to the vehicle's return.
Snicker.

Well, the criminals know full well their intended targets will not be armed, so why not be brazen.
The thieves were probably looking for the crack cocaine..oh wait, that's the DC Mayor.
So why wasn't it parked AT his home instead of NEAR it?

Maybe this is part of the problem with Washington --- the close proximity of the REAL D.C. -- yuk. Kinda like living next to a toxic waste dump.
Hehehehehehe!
My biggest concern would be communications equipment that might be in the car. The chief's car would probably have access to all the various first responders' frequencies. If you wanted to disrupt communications for emergency responders, that would be useful gear to have in your possession.
In D.C. the thieves steal regular cop cars thinking the 9-1-1 on them means it's a Porsche.
You've never tried to park in DC, have you?

Great point. However, it is also possible that that equipment could be used to locate the car. Most of that town is on a special Nextel cellular system that is very secure. My analog scanner picked up almost nothing there.
If the system has GPS, they could find the car if anyone keys the radio.
I'm going to take a wild guess and assume that the theives don't regularly read FR. LOL!
Thank goodness - NO!
A little behind the times, aren't you? You can put Miami, LA, and all or part of many US cities and states into the 3rd world category too.
I doubt the driver could find a parking spot for the chief's car. It's common in DC to hunt around and end up parking a couple blocks from home. The majority of houses have no driveways and unless there is room to park in the rear off an alley one is left with cruising for a space.
Really. When I lived in the District, if I found a parking place in front of my house when I got home, I felt like cracking open a bottle of champagne. I finally paved over part of my backyard to have a designated spot, and when I sold that house, the real estate agent told me I got around $35,000 extra just for that parking pad.
The Metropolitan Police Department is hoping a tip will lead to the vehicle's return.
I will give them a tip. Just look where all the other hundred thousand stolen, chopped up, used for parts cars are. A good Crown Vic will bring in a few bucks or easily traded for some of Marion Barry's finest.
The unique thing about DC is that it is a chunk of 3rd World that is not a subset of any other jurisdiction such as a state. IMO that has a lot to do with its exceptionally poor performance.
It's not an ethnic or immigrant thing. The District of Columbia is the perfect example of a Third World country and government in the middle of the United States. It's consistently Democratic. It's broke, the crime rate is rampant and out of control, the population is disarmed, city services crash and burn while the fat cats get rich, the government is so huge and oppressive it strangles business and investment, and yet the people keep voting the same incompetent government back in with 90% of the vote every time.
This is a city that told its employees to bring their own toilet paper to work because the company stocking city government bathrooms suspended work...the city was many months behind on payment.
This is a city that had multiple cases of police cars being abandoned when they broke down due to lack of maintenance and tow truck operators would not respond to get them (either bad credit, or bad neighborhood).
This is a city that had a mayor caught on camera smoking crack with a woman not his wife, got sent up on felony charges, spend years in prison...and then got re-elected to City Council in a landslide.
This is a city that actually printed license plates with "TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION" on them.
Robert Mugabe would love DC.
