ANITA HILL'S AFTER LIFE (Oprah's "no Chief Justice Clarence Thomas" campaign)

ANITA HILL'S AFTER LIFE
By Elizabeth Mitchell

In 1991 more than 20 million TV viewers watched as a well-regarded young law professor named Anita Hill accused her former boss, Clarence Thomas, of sexual harassment—and in return was smeared as a pathological liar, a would-be political assassin, and a prude. Thomas made it to the Supreme Court, and Hill vanished into academia—but not before changing the way we think about men and women in the workplace.

The Hearings

On October 11, 1991, the 35-year-old faced a grilling by 14 white male senators, many of them furious that she had delayed their march to confirm Clarence Thomas to the Supreme Court. The topic was his alleged sexual harassment of her when she worked at the Department of Education and, later, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), but the tone of the hearings clearly implied that the Republican senators were out to prove her a liar. Carried by the networks and PBS over three days of near-continuous coverage, Hill's accounts of Thomas's describing the length of his penis and enjoying pornography involving animals reached more than 20 million American households. Beyond that, CNN carried the testimony worldwide to an audience so rapt, Hill has been recognized on the streets of South Africa and Bhutan.

Even today, for many people Anita Hill is a hero.

... in coming forward, Anita Hill was also branded everything from a delusional, bitter prude to a sexual deviant. Her home phone rang incessantly with death threats. Despite Hill's courage, Clarence Thomas went on to the Supreme Court, while she spent half of the next decade in agony.

Oprah has two choices for Chief Justice: Thomas or Scalia. I'll bet she'd be far happier with Thomas (not that she'll like Thomas all that much, but the alternative will seem much worse to her.)

While the Left is congratulating themselves about the 'success' of Anita Hill, do you think that it will occur to them that this tactic laid the groundwork for Paula Jones to go after one Bill Clinton? No, I suppose not...

So like, he used foul language and taunted me. So like, I called him after we didn't work together any longer. And like, I asked for him to pick me up alone at the airport. And like, I rode alone with him to my destination. And like, he was just the most terrible person. Like, I could barely stand it when he did this favor for me.

Thomas is my personal favorite.

I'd love to reopen this battle.

Did she have an affair with Bubba, as well?

That is what just torques me about this whole thing. Anita is a hero...but anyone who tried to call BJC on much, much worse behavior is trailer trash/lying rhymes with witch. You'd think the same people who excuse real human rights abuses in various countries for imagined ones at Gitmo would be behind this.

Oh wait! They are. Sigh.

She's not authentically black. A real black woman would want a black man on the Supreme Court. She tried to stop him from getting there, so she's a sell-out to white racists in the Democrat party. She's an Uncle Tom. I have no respect for a woman with so little pride in her race.

What? The Left can talk like that, but Conservatives can't?

I don't think that she would go for Thomas, over Scalia; I'm sure that she would consider Thomas a race-traitor.

You're sure it won't be an outside appointment? The Chief Justice doesn't have to be a current justice, and I personally don't think he will be. Not that I'm sure it'll be Gonzales, but I think he's more likely than either Thomas or Scalia.

Didn't she follow him to at least one new job after he had supposedly harrassed her? Does Gloria Steinem's "one free grope" rule for Bubba apply to Clarence Thomas ex post facto? No, I didn't think so.

Anita is a liar, and after what the country went through with Bubba and all his bimbos, it is laughable that the libbies would try to resurrect her.

Seems like a silly thing. Thomas won't be Chief Justice. IMHO its pretty obvious that Scalia is the heir apparent. He's got the seniority and the standing. Its a clear choice.

The second I hear Hill was a law professor I knew she was nuts.

BTW this is a bogus campaign since it is Scalia who has the inside tract to the chief position.

This is so they will claim victory.

Oprah might as well claim she causes the sun to rise because she beat the crap out of steadman today.

Geeze, you forgot the barf alert! And I just finished dinner!

The key to the whole Hill-Thomas fiasco is easy. There weren't too many people who noticed that not a single person who knew both of them stuck up for Hill. They were all on Thomas' side. That said volumes to me.
