Taft didn’t tell of golf outings
Columbus Dispatch ^ | June 22, 2005 | Joe Hallett and Mark Niquette

Posted on 06/22/2005 6:05:27 AM PDT by Columbus Dawg

Already under fire for his administration’s role in an investment scandal, Gov. Bob Taft admitted yesterday that he failed to disclose a number of golf outings as required by state law.

One of Taft’s playing partners on at least one occasion was scandal-tarred Toledo coin dealer Thomas W. Noe, a wellplaced source said on condition of anonymity. The men played at Toledo’s storied Inverness Club, the source said.

But it was unclear whether Taft was required to disclose to the Ohio Ethics Commission any golf he played with Noe. If the governor paid his own way, he would not be required to report it.

Taft’s office refused to confirm that Noe and the governor played golf together at Inverness, where Noe is a member, but Taft did ’fess up to a number of previously undisclosed outings with still-to-be-named golf partners.

The admission will prompt an investigation by the Ohio Ethics Commission, which could refer charges to the Franklin County prosecutor. If Taft knowingly filed a false financial-disclosure statement, he could face up to six months in jail, a $1,000 fine, or both.

Thank God I'm not a politician... I can't imagine having to fill out in triplicate forms identifying everyone I play golf, or basketball or softball with......

No thanks, you can keep that.

It's not that at all. According to the article, if the official pays his own way, he doesn't need to report it.

The Ohio GOP is looking slimier by the minute. If this stuff turns out to be true and the millions of UC assets were lost due to pay-to-play and corruption, Ohio pubbies need to clean their own house.

Their ability to suffer any abuse or indignation for the sake of power is hard to understand.

Indignation? Taft apparently was getting this stuff paid for. If he pays his own way, there is nothing to report.

Our elected officials exempt themselves from most of the laws they impose on us. And apparently they don't believe they need to adhere to the few laws they pass to monitor freebies and goodies they get from people wanting government business. That is the abuse here, and indignation from Ohio voters needs to be the proper response - the worst politicians are those who believe the laws don't apply to them - like Bill and Hill. They need to be reminded from time to time that the laws actually DO apply to them and not just to us little folks.

Dunno...but I'm ready to elect Blackwell in 2006!

Anyone know what the Dem side is looking like? I'd love to see a Blackwell vs. Coleman (Columbus mayor) race.

I hope Blackwell can get through all this other crap that is beyond his control.

Ted Strickland will be a tough opponent. I think he is the favorite in the Dem primary and in the general. After Strickland entered the race, a lot of the rank and file Democrats I know have got into his corner. Strickland basically got in because of Mike "Don't Question My Manhood" Coleman's screw-ups. A lot of people are throwing the kitchen sink at Coleman right now (school situation, CMACAO, Fire Department Corruption, pay-to-play allegations, etc.).

I think it will be Strickland coming out of the Dem side.

As far as the down ticket races, the people who have declared right now do not impress me. They all are either no names or tax-raising RINO's.

While I hope the Dems pick Coleman, they'll probably go with Stricland who is much tougher to beat.

Tony, there have been tons of twists and turns in this story.

What is next? Will Maurice Clarett reveal one of these people as the infamous Mr. Such and Such?

Will LeBron James admit to having Tom Noe provide him sneakers and his new Hummer in exchange for the rookie cards bought with state funds? Could LeBron be on the take too?

Why didn't Professor Roger Blackwell (no relation to Ken Blackwell) give insider trading information to BWC?

Will OSU admit that the State of Ohio was providing housing and money for it's basketball players and giving them special grades? Maybe BWC thought it was an investment.

Did BWC invest in Jim Tressel's sweater-vests? Maybe Taft is taking lessons in how to answer through B.S. from Tressel.

Did Taft think the green fees at Inverness Country Club in Toledo were going to invest in companies for bringing back Prohibition?

Has the State of Ohio been giving loaner cars to OSU athletes paid for by MDL Capital Corp.?

Did BWC make an investment to test the value of Mike Coleman's manhood?

Did MDL Capital Corp. finance a project to create a device that makes every University of Michigan diploma a handicapped permit?

Was Bob Taft going to find a way to tax it?

Will OSU QB Troy Smith admit taking money from a Republican campaign contributor? Oh, wait, that did happen.

How come Larry Householder and his operatives can't come up with a memo this crazy?

Just some questions I thought about. All in a sarcastic tone of course.

We need a law.
Any elected official who hires a defense attorney should be forced to resign their position.
Period.
