There's nothing quite as important as timing in politics. A fact that might go unnoticed for years can, at the right moment, help change the direction of national policy.
Consider the issue of anchor babies and what, if anything, should be done about them. Anchor babies, for those not yet familiar with the term, is the description given to babies of illegal immigrants who are delivered in the United States. These babies, under current interpretation of U.S. law, automatically become U.S. citizens and most qualify immediately for a variety of benefits, including Medicaid. Over time, they can open the door to citizenship to other family members.
Last week, there was a flurry of national news stories announcing the current estimate that 300,000 such babies are born each year in this country.
There are, of course, pro-immigration groups whose members wouldn't blink, let alone protest, if the number was 10 times that high. Most people, however, would find the number somewhat shocking. Indeed, the news stories set off a new flurry of debate over whether the existing provisions relating to what is called birthright citizenship can or should be changed.
There is a special intensity in this discussion in some states - including California, Texas and Florida - with high anchor baby populations. But the issue is also being noticed in places like Georgia, where the number of anchor babies doubled from 5,133 in 2000 to 11,180 in 2002. Several years ago in Colorado, the number of such births was estimated at more than 6,000.
A measure pending in Congress would change the Constitution to deny citizenship rights to babies born to illegal immigrants. The proposed amendment is currently given little or no chance of passage but it certainly helps to focus attention on the nature of the problem.

I say there are holes in the 14th that a Mack truck could be driven through. Given good lawyers and a pro-American judges we could get good rulings. The 14th was clearly not designed to allow illegal alien spawn to slide into the USA as citizens. It's gotten so bad that pregnant South Korean women get legal visas to fly in here and have their baby, then leave with him. They want that US citizenship for the kid to hold in reserve.
The original intent of this law was that children of LEGAL immargants were born American citizens, not every border jumper who slithered across.
Thank the Democrates, Fat Teddey in particular.
Our children will curse our stupidity.
Babies should not be allowed to be citizens unless one of the parents is here legally.
If Europe is so worthy of imitation, then we must change
our citizenship laws...just as Europe has done over the last twenty years or so.No more automatic citizenship
just because you were delivered here!!
They do tend to be the turd in the punchbowl. (Pardon the expression)
I've said before that the solutions to this problem is simple (technically, not politically). If a child is born to an illegal mother, she has to leave the country. If she chooses to take the child with her, he will be treated as an illegal till his 18th birthday, when he will begin to be treated as a citizen, except that his citizenship status will never be able to be used to influence immigration rulings for family members. She has the alternative of leaving him here as a full US citizen and putting him up for adoption, but if she does, no record is kept of her identity.
Sounds better than the current mess.
I also agree that only a legal US citizen can birth a legal US citizen.
(Should be)...

Not to worry. Our President is very comfortable with that situation, and as good little Republicans we should agree with him and hit sarcasm button.
We can't get past the fact the George Bush is our President and is the leader of this country. It is his responsibility to defend and protect American soil from invasions from hostile countries, and that includes their children.
He has done a miserable job on protecting the citizens of America, and his party is going to pay dearly for it come next election. Hillary will be given the presidency by default, and the country will really be finished.
