Doesnt seem to have been much of a change:

A spokesman for The Human Rights Campaign, a Washington-based gay rights advocacy group, said Disney continues to be one of more than 8,200 companies that offer domestic partner benefits to gay employees.

I am not a Baptist but I joined their boycott of Disney World. I think Disney has done nothing to redeem itself. I will continue my boycott!

I never quite got the boycott. However, my mother-in-law, son, nephew and niece are going this weekend.

We're going to Disney World!

Will you be attending during Gay Southern Baptist Days at Disney next weekend?

A lesbian friend of mine had complained to me just yesterday that Disney was ending "gay day". She and her friends seem to feel that Disney caved to the right wingers..

I was incredulous when she told me, but she lives in Orlando and should know. Then again, she has often fallen prey to rumor and urban legend, so I really don't know.

Hmmmm ... Since Disney never officially organized, coordinated, or sponsored Gay Day(s), I find it hard to see how they can end them. Basically it's a bunch of gay groups that coordinate the dates of when they'll all be gathering at Disney parks. If Disney "ends" this practice, it will have to launch a policy of dicriminatory guest screening that will result in lawsuits you bet.

Don't mistake me -- I have been to Disney parks entirely too many times not to recognize how obnoxious the whole Gay element is there, whether it's Gay Days or the fact that Disney seems to subtly encourage overt "cute" gayness in some of its "cast members" (park employees). All I'm saying is that Disney has never been the organizer behind Gay Days, and I don't see how it has the power to halt individual guests from attending the parks on the basis of their sexual orientation.

For the Southern Baptist boycott to have been effective, there would have had to have been near unanimity among the clergy and churches. The resolutions of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) are not binding upon the thousands of churches associated with the convention. Baptist churches have always been congregational in polity. The only force the anti-Disney resolution would have had is a moral one. The same is true with anti-Disney resolutions passed by the Assemblies of God (AG) and the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA), both of which evangelical denominations, though connectional in polity, give congregations an unrestricted right to secede with their assets (usually real estate) if they disagree with denominational decisions.

However, the SBC is the 800 pound gorilla of evangelical denominations. While conservatives are dominant at the national level, several large state Southern Baptist associations, including those in Texas, Virginia, and North Carolina, are controlled by moderates, who generally have little desire to engage in culture wars. (Moderates in SBC circles are generally orthodox Christians, but differ from conservatives on issues like Biblical inerrancy, separate roles for men and women in church and society, creationism, and interpretation of end times prophecy.) Numerous Baptist churches ignored the Disney boycott, as did many of those in the pews. In the Dallas suburb where I live, the local school board, which had several members who belonged to the largest SBC church in town (whose pastor leaned toward the moderate camp), quashed a motion made by a board member (who was a member of an independent charismatic church) to prevent one of the high school marching bands from taking a trip to Disney World.

Without the consistent support of the churches and members, the SBC boycott was doomed to fail. Without the 800 pound gorilla in the game consistently, boycott resolutions by the AG, the PCA, and others had little chance of success.

Score one for the bad guys in the culture war.
