"I spent all the money I had to buy these properties," said Von Winkle, a former deli owner who lives in the neighborhood and owns two other rental homes. "They were not inherited. They were not a gift. I sold sandwiches to buy these properties. It took 21 years."

Here's a look at the people fighting for their property after living the American dream. I am in tears.

If we're going to have such madness imposed on it, then let's use it. Drill ANWR NOW!! Let's get those windmills built of the Massachusetts coast! Set up the rigs off of Florida and Carolina and California!

Sauce for the goose...

Five justices sided with the city, saying economic revitalization qualifies as a public good and local officials know best when to use their eminent domain power for the community's benefit.

The community's benefit. Now, there is a broad term!

If their land is being taken from them, they should get a stipend based on the revenues generated on it. Anything else is theft and is beneath the dignity of any country that I would be proud of.

The depth of this disasterous ruling cannot be overstated.

The city should have been declared bankrupt and dissolved.

The officials and lawyers behind this are pond scum socialists. And the 5 justices who rubber stamped this thieft are unfit to sit on any bench.

Excuse me while I go off and puke.

This is horrible but what do we expect. We've seen people lose their houses to the government before. The most insiduous is for failure to pay property taxes. One guy lost his home after his wife fell sick with cancer and he couldn't pay taxes on his home on Long Island. The county took the property and sold it for 100 times what he owed in taxes and the guy didn't get anything. That's America today. Property rights are an illusion, we need a Constitutional amendment to spell it out for the morons on the Supreme Court. The question is do we have anyone in the Republican party who has the temerity to push what would be a very popular Amendment. Even the left isn't supportive of this kind of thing.

Good post, andie74. Those poor people's lives are in ashes. The last thing I wanted to see was the New London official crowing over the decision. The way prices and taxes are in CT, I doubt the money they receive for their homes will come anywhere near what it will cost to get another home of similar quality.

The problem is it is NOT Constitutional. the Supreme Court is not given the power under the Constitution to make law or to amend the Constitution which they did in this case. They violated the law.

Wonder about how much kickback money is going into these council men's pockets? probably more than these homeowners are being "compensated" for.

I suggest that anyone who owns property arm themselves. Constitutional protection was just sold to the highest bidder.

Confrontation is mathematically only a matter of time now.

My city is already discussing using this precedent to force people from downtown areas to make room for a new stadium and I am over 1000 miles away from Connecticut.

Our town (Denver, CO) has a developer that wants to put a PRIVATE toll road down practically the entire length of Colorado (parallel to I-25).

There are tens of thousands of property owners that will potentially be affected be eminent domain stealing.

Guess what? The legislature (Demonrat controlled) passed a law last session to keep this PRIVATE company from stealing people's property AND OUR REPUBLICAN GOVERNOR AND POTENTIAL PRESIDENTIAL NOMINEE VETOED IT. GOVERNOR BILL OWENS IS A TRAITOR!!!

BTW...I'm a Conservative and the Republicans have sold out...

"This case makes New London look good and you should be proud to live in New London," said the city's attorney, Wesley Horton

This shyster and others will pay the price one day for their lack of vision.

What are they really after with this ruling? What is it that we are not looking at? We fix our gaze upon the issue at hand. We look with a magnifying glass at what the supreme courts decision could mean regarding our homes and lands. But what else could they really be "after" when this body of justices thumb their noses at the "law of the land" in such a blasphemous way? If they don't have any respect for the law, what then are they really ultimately after in all of this? When you have a handful of people casting opinions that will impact the entire nation in the coming months and those people don't give a damn about righteous judgement, what are they ultimately after? What is the ultimate logical conclusion to their thinking? Is it really about money, land, property, rights, business, the good of the community? All of those are their moral argument. Its time to start thinking like our adversary and figure out where they are really ultimately going with this kind of rubbish. Their opinion today was criminal, illegal and Unconstitutional. The free land grab doctrine espoused today by the socialist communist supreme court members is not about the United States of America nor is it about "our" Constitution, its about someone elses constitution, one that abhors the "idea" of America in principle and in deed.

Just exactly who are you people who reside on the court of the supreme court of the "......"? What court are you in reality? Who do you really answer to? What does your flag that you fly really look like? Is it red, does it have a hammer on it? What about that farming tool that you incorporate into your flag, I've always seen that tool to imply anything but farming. For me it embodies the farming/harvesting of human rights and human beings around the world.

What are you really after?

The God of America, He is watching you. As are the people of America. We are indeed a God fearing nation, people who are keenly aware of a fox lurking around in the hen house, a wolf, seeking whom it may devour.

God is watching you...

So now a town/city/county/state can condemn anyone's private property to build a Wal-mart?
