Bad tamales appear to sicken Monterey inmates

A bunch of bad tamales may have given a bunch of bad apples in Monterey County a bunch of trouble.

Monterey County health officials were scratching their heads today over an outbreak of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and other flu-like symptoms among dozens of inmates at the county jail.

At last count this morning, 68 inmates were being treated at the infirmary, and authorities said the common thread among them all was the dinner of inmate-made tamales they enjoyed — if only briefly — Wednesday night,

You have to wonder what ingredients go into an "inmate made" tamale, but on the other hand do I really care?

EVERYTHING inside a tamale is gross! I love Mexican food but the smell of tamales sends my stomach lurching.

Can we have a thread of just daily headlines and try to guess what the story is about? This sounded like some government funded health study. "Appear" to make them sick? Ha!

I so agree with that. I love Mexican food also, but man tamales I just can NOT take!
