Would love to see a good old fashioned blanket party
thrown in the honor of some - A bit more civilized than the
Hot tar and feather spa treatment they deserve. But as Eeyore says "Probably wouldn't make a difference anyhow."
If you own the Federal building in OKC and you can do it without hurting anyone or damaging their property, go ahead.
It's time to bring down the World Trade Center when some clown passes a law that says I can't?
If you own the WTC and you can do it without hurting anyone or damaging their property, go ahead.
It's time to burn a cross on someones lawn when someone says I can't?
If you own the cross and the lawn and you can do it without hurting anyone or damaging their property, go ahead.
If I purchase a piece of cloth with colored stripes and stars on it, I can do whatever I please with it. It's my property. I own it. It has no sentience, no legal personality, no rights, no expectation of dignity, no sense of stress or pain, right or wrong. It is not given rights by the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, the UNDHR, the Golden Rule, or the Ten Commandments. It's an object. And I can do whatever I want with objects that I own.
If a bunch of congress critters decide to sanctify and fetishize the flag, I'll call their actions what they are: putting a glossy coat on their false patriotism. Real patriots would work towards securing the border, protecting the men and women of the military, and protecting the rights of all Americans from the government. False patriots shed crocodile tears over defaced symbols while letting the ideals rot from within.
Bump that.
In a time when the government is taking away our property rights, we might want to rethink banning flag burning. This ploy designed to distract us. We should expect more from our elected representatives.
Thanks for the ping, Pokey! (To the whole thing, even!)
Suppose another eight years of the Clintons, a Supreme Court decision banning the 10 Commandments, the Supreme Court decision allowing gov't to seize your property, the FBI searching your house without a warrant, doing away with the 2nd ammendment....would you blame someone for burning the American flag???
I remember when Iranian students burned our Flag before they sacked our Embassy. I watched Sportscaster Gib Shanley at Channel 5 in Cleveland set an Iranian flag on fire right after the scores ran one night on the 11:00 news. That was awesome!!
That's the point: A flag has to be worth torching. When a flag gets burned, that's not a sign of its weakness but of its strength. If you can't stand the heat of your burning flag, get out of the superpower business.
I stop to bump Steyn.
I don't give a crap what you do with a piece of cloth as you
call it that you have purchased -a slong as you do it on your property. The original case was some faggot Communist
couldn't get the attention he wanted by use of profanity and vulgar gestures -he led his fellow scum on a tour of
petty vandalsim and theft and the flag they burned they had stolen. Their actions were on public property and the intent was to disrupt a legitimate public event. So don't be whining about your right to be an ass.
bump
Mark Steyn is right on the money. The fact that the 'Pubbies are trotting this hobbyhorse out one more time is just stupid.
We should provide flags and matches to every idiot who wants them, so we will at least see them for what they are. The vast majority of people will react with revulsion to burning the flag, so they will just wind up isolating themselves on the fringe. This is a good thing.
