Tighter efficiency requirements put chill on air conditioning industry

Jun 24, 2005 (The Augusta Chronicle - Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News via COMTEX) -- Energy-hungry air conditioners are getting the cold shoulder from the government. And after January, you'll no longer be able to buy them.

For consumers, this means more energy efficient -- but higher priced -- air conditioners.

Am I wrong to be really irate about this type of government regulation? The do-gooder government goons take steps in the name of benevolence and fail to see the people hurt by it.

They only see that they are "saving the environment." They don't see the people who were on the edge of affording A/C and now can't. They also don't see the unemployment and damage to the economy that results from this. If it used to cost me $3000 to install a system and now it suddenly costs $4000, that means I now have $1000 less to spend on other things. Whoever it is that manufactures whatever those other things are will soon be out of work. Then the selfsame left that favors central planning will decry the unemployment rate!

This is a classic example of the weaknesses of central planning and how it suffers greatly from the law of unintended consequences. They can't just let freedom ring and have the market and the real costs of energy regulate usage.

P.S. I had a 10 SEER unit installed at my condo about 3 years ago and it was pretty efficient. I was surprised at how little it cost me to run it.

Last year, the Department of Energy declared low-end air-conditioning units consume too much energy and set up a production ban that takes effect Jan. 23.

Until then, local air conditioning companies are bracing for a change in the way they do business.

"Anytime you change the minimum requirements on anything, the transition time is tough on anybody -- companies and consumers," said Richard Hutchins, president of Gold Mech Services Heating & Air Conditioning.

At American Standard, the company that produces Trane air conditioners, 80 percent of their products are out of compliance with the new standards, said Dave Pannier, president of the company's residential systems business.

Stupid government. Screwing businesses and consumers.

Does this only apply to central air units?

I'm glad I replaced the central AC unit in my Georgia home last year. I'd hate to have to pay even more money not to be completely miserable 6 months out of the year.

Per my HVAC contractor, the refrigerant for the new units will cost much more than the refrigerant for current models.

I would love to see a contractor who can speak to the difference in the coolant. I could be wrong. But I remember what a ripoff the auto air folks pulled when they did R12 'conversions.' The auto air business handed customers who went from R12 to R134a big bills for minimal effort and those who stayed on R12 were charged an arm and a leg, too.

I'm wondering the same thing. How could this possibly affect window units?

The government believes air conditionioning is "unsustainable". They don't want people to have it. The fact that the United Nations has declared airconditioning unsustainable in its global biodiversity report is one reason so few people in France had air conditioning that dreadful summer when 15000 people died from the heat.

The US EPA is a "sustainable development" agency for the US government. It is the one issuing rulings like this and has been one agency responsible for the corruption of our government through sustainable development policies that have come down from the United Nations.

"...current lifestyles and consumption patterns of the affluent middle class - involving high meat intake use of fossil fuels, appliances, home and work-place air-conditioning, and suburban housing - are not sustainable. A shift is necessary. which will require a vast strengthening of the multilateral system, including the United Nations..." [1] Maurice Strong , opening speech at the 1992 UN Conference on Environment and Development
