Microsoft released a final update rollup for Windows 2000 on Tuesday (28 June) just two days before expiration of mainstream support of the still-widely-used operating system. The update contains every security patch issued since the release of Service Pack 4 and the end of April 2005 along with various non-security related software bug fixes.
The release is described as a consolidated update, rated than a service pack, and contains only a few items that have not already been issued as standalone fixes. Full details of the content of Update 1 for Windows 2000 SP4 - along with download instructions - can be found on Microsoft's website here. ®
Or upgrade to Windows XP!
I consider XP and 2K to be different OSes. Sorry about the confusion.
In related news, Ford announced that they would no longer provide spare/replacement parts for any Ford vehicle bought before 1999 - furthermore, any company supplying parts for Ford vehicles will be sued for theft on intellectual property.
BTW--asutomakers are required (by law, I believe) to provide spare/replacement parts for any vehicle they produce for quite a bit longer than that--I think the number I've heard is 20 years.
XP only buy you a year and a half http://www.microsoft.com/windows/lifecycle/default.mspx
Just updated about 15 minutes ago.
Hey! I've just about had enough of you pointing out weaknesses in Microsoft's strategy!
:-)
Seriously though longhorn should *crossing fingers* be out before there is an issue for 2k users, and I plan on waiting until then to upgrade. No way Im I going to get suckered into two paid upgrades in two years..
Ah, yes. I had a CP/M card for my Apple IIe. It allowed me to start using Turbo Pascal 3.0! Just about 20 years ago now.
I can't believe they are ending support for 2000. 80% of the clients in my company are Windows 2000. I wonder if this applies to 2K Server as well?
I would think so, but I haven't heard. < shrug >
Yes, it does. You guys are lucky. I have to get recertified for Server 2003 and XP. Granted, it is only a couple of classes, but I pay for it out of my own pocket and I haven't completed my MCSE cert for 2000 track (two exams left)! I know, poor planning on my part, but it still sucks!
Anyway, my company has 2000 server, but all but one desktop has XP now. I don't think XP is as good as 2000 Pro, but it isn't ME either! I know a LOT of companies will be real reluctant to upgrade as 2000 is probably the best platform MS has put out. Will be interesting to see how it all pans out.
We are going Server 2K3 next year. Going to start classes on it this summer. I already use it for my Active Directory Domain at home, and it's very good.
In all fairness, we'll still be able to get "spare/replacement parts" for Win2K from MS as long as it has replacement disks and SP1 thru SP4 Update 1 available for purchase or download.
Rarely does any automaker provide updates for its cars -- especially beyond the warranty period -- unless ordered by your government to do so (i.e. involuntary recall).
XP sucks. But then, of course, so did '95, '98, and Win2k. 3.1 was the last one that worked well, and even it didn't work flawlessly. But you could just get back to DOS and fix it manually. So I guess DOS was the last good MS operating system.
Got my 2k3 certs (mcse, mcbda, security+) a few months ago.. damn is 2k3 nice..
