NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- As many as 1,000 U.S. Marines and soldiers are engaged in what a Pentagon spokesman called "an ongoing rescue mission" in eastern Afghanistan, ABC News reported Thursday night. The comment came at a Pentagon news conference in which officials announced the recovery of all 16 bodies of U.S. military personnel on a helicopter which was flying reinforcements to troops operating in eastern Afghanistan.

So... Does this mean they are still fighting somebody there in the vicinity of the crash? If so, that's VERY interesting.
They've been saying that since the helo went down. Fighting has continued and casualtie numbers may well increase. God bless our troops.
I heard earlier that the area is swarming with Taliban.
All reports I've seen mention an anti-Al Qaeda operation.
Wow. I've actually been very busy, little time for news or FReeping, so I hadn't heard. Prayers Up! Victory!
Thanks, Y'all!
Can I ask why we arent dropping 1000 MOABs and taking control rather than fighting a pc war?
Q General, I do apologize for pressing you, but it's an usual statement when a general says from a podium, "We don't have full accountability." Is there any way you can further clarify what you mean?GEN. CONWAY: No.
MR. DI RITA: And let me try and help. What he's trying to say is what we're announcing today is that we're able to confirm 16 personnel on the helicopter. We have acknowledged that the purpose of that helicopter was to go in and reinforce people on the ground. We just are not able to account for any other personnel yet, not in terms of people involved in rescue or anything like that, that's not what the general's referring to. He's just simply making a point that there's an ongoing rescue mission, and we just don't have any more to confirm than what we have confirmed.
I read yesterday that the terrorists are fighting hard in this particular area. Could be a false alarm but you immediately think that they're protecting some bigwigs. If we hear of a rescue mission, though, there's a good chance that it's already over with.
Because the military is in charge and not some keyboard critic.
The helicopter that crashed was bringing a reaction force to bail out a recon element that was under heavy attack on the ground. I suspect that is what the "rescue" is about. Otherwise, we are there to find and kill or capture as many Al Qaeda & Taliban hold-outs as possible. Obviously we've found a bunch--now it's time to pile on with all we've got.
It is best that I am not running things..I agree.
Well the terrorists know that Americans don't leave their wounded or dead behind so they may have miscalculated that they would standby and attempt to kill another chopper or two of reinforcements, but the M.O. may have backfired on the terrorists if we sent in 1,000 guys locked and loaded.
The war in Afganistan is over. Nancy Pelosi said so.
You must be a member of the SAND to GLASS club.........as am I.
Yup she told us so! barf.......
You are aware that there isn't much in the way of sand up in the mountains, right? Now snow...
Truly fascinating and hair-raising stuff. I've been out of the loop this week for the most part.
Off topic, my apologies, but Tony Snow is doing O'Reilly tonight.
