ORANJESTAD, Aruba (AP) - Three young men detained in the disappearance of an Alabama teenager have been charged with murder since their arrest more than three weeks ago, Aruba's chief prosecutor told The Associated Press on Friday.
The charges were not announced at the time to protect the feelings of the family of 18-year-old Natalee Holloway, said Attorney General Karin Janssen.
"At the time, we didn't want to upset the (Holloway) family talking about murder while they searched," Janssen said.

Wow, what a Keystone Kops story this has been. I confess, I do not understand the Dutch (Aruban) criminal justice system at all!
It's not true AP has withdrawn the story. I think all they are saying is they believed they murdered her from the beginning, they still have not been formally charged.
How do they know it is murder? Did someone confess? How do they know it's not kidnapping?
It makes no sense that they didn't tell the parents. Is that the "aruba rule/law" striking again - this is the way "they" do things?
Can we say... something is not right w/this picture?
Not disputing your post, but do you have a link?
On the one hand, I'm getting weary of this story on all the time, but on the other hand, it just keeps getting interestinger and interestinger.
thanks for the update.
Unbelievable!!!!!!!!!
Does anyone want to go to Aruba?
I'd still go. Have had friends who have gone there, and they tell me it is a fantastic vacation spot.
The link is in the body of the excerpt.
Right, but I was asking the poster who said that the AP had withdrawn the story, and that they had not been charged.
Sorry. Someday I'll learn how to read.
If anyone totally lacks the background and knowledge to criticize the Aruban justice system, it's the blonde relatives of a missing teenager and the blonde members of the U.S. media.
Why does anyone give these people's opinion any credence whatsoever?
S'okay, really! I've done it many more times than I care to admit. I'm just interested in seeing if the AP stands by its story. This case has been just so strange.
Not sure I get what you're saying, there.
I just can't get over the confused jumble that this story has become, and even though I'm getting weary of it, I find it interesting in a strange sort of way.
I feel sorry for her family, going through this.
I heard this on the radio a little while ago. They had some Aruban female official saying they just wanted to spare the family's feelings, didn't want to talk about murder, and so on. Which sounds strange. Like "We figured it was better for you to have false hope when we in fact believe she is no longer alive." I'd rather know the truth if I were the parent, no matter how painful.
Point being: Don't mess with U.S. It may be a nice vacation spot but this could make it better.
OK, just heard on Hannity, apparently the boys have not been charged in the murders, but will continue to be held in jail.
Wow, what a strange case this is.
