You know, there's a historical precedent for the Durbin incident. During the Civil War, Lincoln was greatly disturbed by the actions of Ohio's Clement Vallandigham, leader of the treasonous "Copperhead" faction of the democrat party.

Vallandigham's seditious rhetoric became so volatile that General Ambrose Burnside, commander of the geographical area where Vallandigham was operating, had him arrested.

Lincoln realized that prosecuting Vallandigham for treason was a no-win situation, yet he had to do something to stop Vallandigham from further hurting the Union cause and getting Union soldiers killed.

Lincoln's solution? He had Vallandigham escorted into Confederate held territory, where he could be with those who Vallandigham held in his sympathy.

I wonder how much Durbin would enjoy being escorted to the Iranian border?
