S. Korea: Millions of Clams Washed Ashore (beats Easter egg hunt)

On July 6th, at the Da-dae-po Beach, Pusan, residents flocked to pick up clams. The clams, which are known to usually live 10 meter underwater, unexpectedly turned up on the beach (during a low tide,) which is a rare occurrence. [reporter Song Bong-keun in Pusan] -- source: JoongAng Ilbo

According to some local marine biologists, it is possible that, due to the recent heavy downpour of rain, there was abrupt large influx of freshwater and silts from the nearby river into the sea, which lowers oxygen level and salinity of seawater where clams live. It might have immobilized them enough to be exposed during the low tide or they were just trying to escape the environment which suddenly turned hostile. It might require further investigation to determine the exact cause. A stunned local women remarked that she has never seen such a spectacle during the last two decades.

At least the Korean clams don't look like these nasty clams from the Pacific Northwest.
