WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. government raised the terrorism alert level for buses, subways and trains across the United States on Thursday in the wake of deadly bombings in London but said it expected no similar attack in the United States.

Federal officials said they were promptly in contact with local authorities and commuters were urged to be alert after the series of explosions rocked London killing at least 33 people. British Prime Minister Tony Blair said it was an apparent terrorist attack coinciding with a meeting of Group of Eight leaders in Scotland.

President Bush was in Scotland for the G8 session and said he directed homeland security officials to be extra vigilant as Americans headed to work. Vice President Dick Cheney was at his ranch in Wyoming and was to return to Washington, as planned, on Thursday afternoon.

"The war on terror goes on," Bush said.

Of course it couldn't happen here. We've got tight border security. We exhaustively monitor activities of immigrants. We've.............

Oh, wait.

Never mind.

Wow.

What a complete bunch of triumphalist horse sh*t.

I've seen US government reports which PRECISELY say the next thing that is coming to the USA is, more than likely, suicide bombers, with the targeting of subways, trains, buses, supermarkets, movie theaters and perhaps even schools.

They are LYING to us.

They take us for a bunch of fools. Our government is not even pretending to treat us like adults anymore. And this is a *Republican* government now too.

It wouldn't happen in L.A. because the Metrorail system simply isn't as big a deal to us as the Tube is to London. Now, if they really wanted to hurt us, they'd drop a major freeway interchange or two at rush hour.

We have then as a nation, led by our 'leaders' learned absolutely NOTHING from September 11 then, wouldn't it seem?

The "US Government does not expect" such terrorist acts??

Just as the US government 'did not expect' the attacks on September 11th?

If they do not expect them, then they are not prepared for them.

Anyone out there feel better?

I don't think this is just an errant Yahoo!News headline writer at work.

If it's not expected, why are we not at alert level green?

Exactly.

This should be added to Murphy's Laws. When they say it won't happen, it happens.

I think they're just saying that they don't expect attacks here as part of this same "round" of attacks----say today or tomorrow. If they are actually trying to say that those kind of attacks won't occur here at all, then they're talking out of their asses.

Not quite sure why there's such anger on this thread. I read the article and there's nothing objectionable in it--there are no signs of an attack, and we are remaining vigilant as always.

Somebody is lying to the People.

They don't "expect" them?

And a few hours ago, the Alexandria, VA Police and Fire went to "Level Two alert" (as mentioned to a friend to me who is back East). I guess Alexandria--near D.C., doesn't expect anything, too. I guess the police in the D.C. Metro this morning suddenly appearing with automatic weapons, don't 'expect' anything.

What fools or saps do they think we ARE?
