Mayor Newsom lashes out at protesters in police officer injury

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - A San Francisco police officer injured at an anarchists' protest remained hospitalized Saturday as Mayor Gavin Newsom vowed to get tough on violent demonstrators.

The unidentified officer suffered a gash to his head when was struck with an unknown object as he confronted protesters late Friday at Mission and 23rd Street, said police officer Maria Oropeza.

A photo taken by a passer-by and aired on KRON 4 news shows an officer, his head and face covered in blood, kneeling on the ground and clutching his police radio.

Cody Tarlow, 21, of Felton and Doritt Earnst, 31, of Berkeley were arrested in the incident, along with a third suspect who refused to give police his name, according to officials. Each was charged with attempted lynching, malicious mischief, resisting arrest and aggravated assault on a police officer with a deadly weapon, among other charges, according to Oropeza.

"We take these things very seriously," Newsom said Saturday. "This time things got out of control. Next time we're going to be much more vigilant."

The confrontation occurred as the officer responded to reports of vandalism by a splinter group of about 50 protesters, many in hats with bandanas over their faces, who had broken off from a main demonstration earlier in the evening, according to Oropeza.

About 10 p.m. protesters threw a mattress beneath the officer's patrol car intending to ignite it, Oropeza said. The officer was struck when he exited his car, according to police.

The demonstration was organized in part by Anarchist Action. An anarchist web site called for protests in San Francisco Friday to protest the Group of 8 economic summit in Scotland.

Of course, Newsom was only concerned because the whole thing was caught on tape.

Which is why fag Newsome, chief fag in a city run by fags, made any announcement whatsoever.

These so-called anarchists are a bunch of cowards, playing at being revolutionaries. No one should have any respect for these clowns.

Anarchists are a bunch of kids acting out a fantasy. They have no real vision for government. Their protest makes them feel that they're "heroes of the revolution". Cops should bust some heads...

But it's the Minutemen that the ACLU et al monitor and denounce as having a proclivity towards violence. Hell, the ACLU will probably defend the accused.

They hide their faces. They know they're acting like idiots. If they really believed in what they were breaking grown up things for, they'd be proud to show their faces.
They're just trying to be a "really cool club for teens".

We have the same basic type of people who see fit to act out their sick impulses at regular intervals. As I am out there countering them with PW, or independently, I feel relatively certain, having observed their behaviour, that one day they will cross the line when I am within arm's length of them.

My father was a sheriff's deputy for 24 years, and I take umbrage to the protestors' constant disrespect for everything and everybody that doesn't conform to their twisted worldview.

No guessing necessary as to what will then transpire.

Anarchists will work with Al Quaida if they see a common interest... bringing down the USA.

We should not underestimate the danger these guys pose.

Standard practice should be to announce an evacuation due to reports of a bomb.

Watch them flee.

I've nevr understtod why cops allow protesters to be masked and to attack the cops by throwing things. They do it in Palestinians area, where ever the neocommunists protest normal people/events and the did it last week in Scotland.

Protest is one thing but armed attacks intending to do damage are another. These three SFO lads should spend a long time in some nasty prison.

I don't think he is a homoxesual. I saw a pic of him and his wife and she impressed me as quite a goodlooking young woman. Have they split up?

I think my gift to FRISCO will be to post the story in any and all travel forums I can find with a section/thread on SF.

Just one family turned away from SF is at least a few hundred tourist dollars they won't get.
