Security Tightened for APEC

PUSAN _ Pusan has tight security plans for hosting this year's Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in November, organizers said.

``Our city is strengthening cooperative measures with relevant agencies to beef up security for the major event,’’ Lee Kyung-hoon, executive director of the Preparatory Office for APEC 2005, said in a telephone interview.

His remarks came as police in Pusan, South Korea’s second largest city, increased anti-terrorism patrols around public facilities, including airport and train stations, after terrorists hit London last week.

``Military, police and the National Intelligence Service have joined forces to deal with any attempts to launch terrorist attacks,’’ Lee said. ``We are also cooperating with intelligence agencies abroad.’’

He declined to elaborate due to concerns of intelligence leakages. A round of anti-terrorism training programs will be held before the opening of the summit, set for Nov. 18-19, organizers said.

The police strengthened a cordon around APEC House, a dome-shaped villa that is under construction on an islet off Pusan. Now being fitted with bulletproof glass and metal plates, the house is designed to be resistant to an 8-magnitide earthquake. Security agents were also working to construct bulletproof screens around the BEXCO building, another venue for the international talks.

The APEC forum will be attended by 21 leaders and is one of the largest international events ever to be hosted by Pusan. Organizers estimate that more than 6,000 people will come from abroad for the summit and related events.

S. Korea dispatched 3,000 troops to Iraq. In coming November, APEC Summit will be held in Pusan, S. Korea, where leaders from Pacific Rim countries, including U.S. President G.W. Bush and Japanese Prime Minister Koizumi will attend.

So S. Korea is a natural prime target for Jihadis in next November. Tension would run high during the event.

Me thinks it'd be kind of hard to hide a bunch of Arabs in a country of Koreans...
