London: After the success of Live8, the largest live concert ever held, politicians said people power could make a difference as Group of Eight (G8) leaders prepared to meet to discuss Africa.
Over a million people listened to rock and pop musicians at 10 venues across four continents on Saturday demanding that the G8 nations move to help Africa when they meet for a summit in Scotland on Wednesday.
Event organiser Bob Geldof, who set up the Live Aid concerts 20 years ago that raised $100 million for Africa, is now pushing for a doubling of aid to Africa, cancellation of debts and fairer trade rules.

Funny how Mugabee can plunge a country into despair with no mention at Live8.
My guess is that it has nothing to do with Africa; same nutty left wing philosophy that destroyed the American inner city. Its not about the outcome, the means is the ends. Its always about getting more money, no matter who it kills.
What's the answer?
Culture.
Corruption in these 3rd world countries does more to impoverish those nations than anything else. But we're not suppose to talk about that. Just shut up, smoke a doob, groove to some jammin tunes, and donate to the Swiss bank accounts of the African despots. Sure, you're just making the problem worse, but you'll feel better about yourself, and that's really what's important, right?
What exactly is a chancese?
Feed The Lions and let nature sort it all out. :)
maybe a typo. Chances?
I disagree, there is a solution. The west has it, Japan has it, Singapore has it, Shanghai "zone" has it, IT comlexes in Banglore have it, even the powerful few in Africa have it. And wealth accumulation is the result.
yep - typo
I dunno ... sounds plausible.
For a long time I have believed and continue to believe that dumping bucks into Africa, whether aid or donations, is a mistake. It's all, or most of it, going to be co-opted by the evil folks ruling the area.
I don't know what the real answer is; perhaps it suggests just letting it play itself out. The result is ugly but wealthy countries butting in with money may just prolong the agony for the populace.
I know I'll be considered unfeeling and mean but I don't give a rat's a** about Africa. If they don't have someone who can run their countries with commonsense and honesty I don't care, let 'em sink.
Was it really a "concert" or a series of global events linked together via television?
Wasn't the Live Aid concert to help struggling European, American and other Western culture countries?
I mean the aid comes from the G8 countries, which are Western culture countries, and therefore it would go for their own people, not foes.
This don't make sense.
"Does any here think that financial aid can do any good?"
The answer to your question is really simple. The aid does a great deal of harm to us because money are being stolen from us and given to the enemy. It's that simple.
I've noticed one or two economic and cultural illiterates among the (thousands of) FReepers...

"In terms of natural resources, Africa is the world's richest continent. It has 50 percent of the world's gold, most of the world's diamonds and chromium, 90 percent of the cobalt, 40 percent of the world's potential hydroelectric power, 65 percent of the manganese, millions of acres of untilled farmland as well as other natural resources. Despite the natural wealth, Africa is home to the world's most impoverished and abused people. Of the 41 black African nations, only three (Senegal, Botswana and Mauritius) allow their people the right to vote and choose their own leaders. Only two (Botswana and Senegal) permit freedom of expression and criticism of government policies. In countries like Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Mozambique, Sudan, Chad and others, ethnic genocide has taken the lives of untold millions of innocent victims. Slavery is still practiced in the Sudan and Mauritania." -- Dr. Walter E. Williams"Another current catch-phrase is the complaint that the nations of the world are divided into 'haves' and the 'have-nots.' Observe that the 'haves' are those who have freedom, and that it is freedom that the 'have-nots' have not." -- Ayn Rand
