McCain's seen the polls. He knows which side is most politically expidient to be on.

Oh goodie. McCain's on our side, today.

He's trying to make up for giving it to us in the shorts on illegal immigration.

He knows Gonzales is one of the nominees. Once he "fights" for Gonzales, it'll give him plenty of cover to torpedo anyone else who is nominated afterwards.

That makes the most sense.

McCain may be crazy but he's not stupid. He'll need to spend much or all of the next two years re-labeling himself as a card carrying conservative to stand any chance in the '08 primaries.

I always thought that Warner was reliably, ardently conservative. After his capitulation with my wuss-boy senator, I found out about collegiality. It sucks. What are the chances your boy will lose to his junior namesakes the next go-round?

Never trust a con artist, a wolf in sheep's clothing, someone who has continuously proved you cannot trust him, etc.

Take what he says with a grain of salt people and let him prove it, talk is cheap.

IMO, McCain "knows something," such as Bush will present a consensus nominee, i.e, Gonzales.

He's made a career out of not listening to the AZ GOP. Why would he start now?

Well said. McCain in running for president, and he knows he has to placate/ingratiate himself with conservatives in order to have any chance of winning the Repub nod.

McCain isn't really a liberal, he just plays one on TV.

When it comes time to vote, he'll vote with us virtually all the time.

I think you are right. McCain loves the lime light and that was more the reason for his most recent sell out rather than any ideological reasons.

That and the fact that one of his heros and role models was Barry Goldwater, who himself had some radical ideas for a conservative. Pro abortion, pro homosexual.

Anything McCain does is for the furtherment of McCain. Even when it includes a certain amount of notority.

I think that he and Graham and Dewine and other moderate-but-not-quite-RINO's all took a large amount of heat for that stunt they pulled in May. Maybe there were some promises of serious consequences should they continue to play to the media and the 'Rats rather than their own party.

True, remember McCain was saying this at a conservative fund raiser, telling the audience what they want to hear so they can donate.

This entire SCOTUS is starting to stink to high heaven,

CAVEAT: freepers, don't get your hopes high on this, I do not see a conservative making it through the nomination process under the Bush administration. IMHO.

Did McCain get his hands on some polling data?

This is a winning issue for conservatives.
