Death toll in Netanya bombing rises to 4

The death toll in the bombing in Netanya rose to four on Wednesday after a fourth woman died of her wounds. Three women were killed outright and 70 more wounded when an Islamic Jihad suicide bomber blew himself up outside a crowded Netanya mall Tuesday evening. The blast shattered a relative lull in such attacks since the last Islamic Jihad bombing in February.

Anya Lifschitz, 50, died Wednesday at Laniado Hospital in Netanya of wounds suffered in the terror attack. Her daughter is in very serious but stable condition with multiple system injuries at the Rabin Medical Center-Beilinson Campus in Petah Tikva, while her three-a-and-half-year-old daughter, in serious but stable condition, is being treated for burns and wounds at nearby Schneider Children's Medical Center for Israel.

Late Wednesday morning, the names of three of the victims were released. The victims were: Yulia Voloshin, 31, a resident of Netanya, Rachel ben Abu, 16, and Nofar Horovitz, also 16, both from Tel Aviv.

Rachel's brother, Shimon, said that when he first heard about the disaster his immediate response was thinking that it had been his father. "I couldn't believe that it was my sister. It was and still is incomprehensible," he said.

Shimon described Rachel as vibrant and full of life. "She loved to run, dance, see things, mingle, listen to music. Your average 16-year-old teenager."

Rachel was in the midst of her summer vacation after completing the tenth grade at the Kfar Hayarok Boarding School.

Rachel was Nofar Horovitz's best friend. "They knew each other from early childhood. Our families are neighbors – we live on Ben-Yehuda and they live on Hayarkon Street. They went to the same kindergarten and the same school," Shimon said.

Both will be laid to rest at 5 p.m. on Wednesday evening at the Yakron Cemetery in Tel Aviv.

On Wednesday morning, 39 people were still hospitalized, with one listed in critical condition.

Internal Security Minister Gideon Ezra said Wednesday that Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas, widely known as Abu Mazen, should take immediate action and go after Islamic Jihad.

"Abu Mazen has to understand that these things don't just hurt Israel ... in the end it will bring down his government," Ezra told Israel Radio. "His job now is to catch the people. He has the opportunity and the police, and to say `I can't' is not an excuse. He has to try and he has to do it."

Until now, Abbas has chosen to co-opt the terrorist groups rather than confront them, fearing such a tactic would lead to internal fighting. Late Tuesday, Abbas used unusually strong language to denounce the bombing, calling the perpetrators "traitors."

"There is no rational man who can do these things on the eve of the Israeli withdrawal from 22 settlements," Abbas said, referring to next month's pullout from the Gaza Strip and four West Bank settlements.

But Israeli and international pressure on Abbas is growing.

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said the suicide bombing was aimed "against the aspirations of the Palestinian people" as well as Israel, and called on the Palestinian Authority to punish those responsible.

"Now we must see actions that send a message that terror will not be tolerated," she said in a statement.

EU Mideast Envoy Havier said, "I condemn in the firmest manner the terrorist attack that took place today in a shopping mall in Netanya. I want first of all to express my deepest condolences to the families of the victims and to the Israeli authorities.

I urge the Palestinian Authority to arrest and bring to justice those responsible for this attack and to improve security co-operation with Israel."

Shani Rosenfelder contributed to this report.

Be against Israel, kill a Jew

Be against "the aspirations of Palestinians", kill a Jew

What could be simpler?

"US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said the suicide bombing was aimed "against the aspirations of the Palestinian people"

The "aspirations" of the "Palestinian"(no such thing) people is terrorism. There are simply Islamic terrorists (from Joran and other places) who want to push Israel into the sea. What part of the Hamas charter does she not understand? Article Thirteen: "Initiatives, and so-called peaceful solutions and international conferences, are in contradiction to the principles of the Islamic Resistance Movement. Abusing any part of Palestine is abuse directed against part of religion. Nationalism of the Islamic Resistance Movement is part of its religion. Its members have been fed on that. For the sake of hoisting the banner of Allah over their homeland they fight. "Allah will be prominent, but most people do not know." "Now and then the call goes out for the convening of an international conference to look for ways of solving the (Palestinian) question. Some accept, others reject the idea, for this or other reason, with one stipulation or more for consent to convening the conference and participating in it. Knowing the parties constituting the conference, their past and present attitudes towards Moslem problems, the Islamic Resistance Movement does not consider these conferences capable of realising the demands, restoring the rights or doing justice to the oppressed. These conferences are only ways of setting the infidels in the land of the Moslems as arbitraters. When did the infidels do justice to the believers?" "There is no solution for the Palestinian question except through Jihad. Initiatives, proposals and international conferences are all a waste of time and vain endeavors. The Palestinian people know better than to consent to having their future, rights and fate toyed with." "The question of the liberation of Palestine is bound to three circles: the Palestinian circle, the Arab circle and the Islamic circle. Each of these circles has its role in the struggle against Zionism. Each has its duties, and it is a horrible mistake and a sign of deep ignorance to overlook any of these circles. Palestine is an Islamic land which has the first of the two kiblahs (direction to which Moslems turn in praying), the third of the holy (Islamic) sanctuaries, and the point of departure for Mohamed's midnight journey to the seven heavens (i.e. Jerusalem)." "Since this is the case, liberation of Palestine is then an individual duty for very Moslem wherever he may be. On this basis, the problem should be viewed. This should be realised by every Moslem." There is no such thing as a "Palestinian". There are Muslims on a mission of Jihad, part of the Muslim brotherhood. Creating a "palistian" state will only provide a launching pad closer to Israel from which to continue their Jihad. STOP FUNDING TERRORISTS!

It's something I just can't get my mind around.

American policy makers like Rice are not anti-Semitic, and certainly not stupid. Why do they push a policy again and again that is doomed to failure. In fact, a policy that makes things consistently go from bad to worse?

When did Ms. Rice become the PA's mouthpiece? She forgets her own childhood in which one of her friens was blown to bits in a Birmingham Alabama church. She should realize that a murderous sheethead is a murderous sheethead. I'm disgusted..

Gag me, already! This sounds like the same mule muffins that came out of Powell's and Albright's mouths! Were the London bombings aimed "against the aspirations of the Muslims in Great Britain?" I swear they put something in the water over at the Department of State, something that melts brain tissue!
